    Valley Oak banned? Why?

I just saw that Valley Oak is banned from this list. Why? Is it because his posts are too controversial?

    What about freedom of speech?

    What about 'freedom of speech?'

WACCO is not a public forum. Barry can be the biggest asshole in the world and ban whoever he wants and it has no actual connection with 'freedom of speech.' Didn't you get the Libertarian memo that only governments can be censors?

As they say, freedom of the press belongs to those who own one.

(later edit: I realize that almost sounds like I am calling Barry an asshole. I should have used the subjunctive...something like 'if Barry were to be the biggest asshole in the world...')

I did not know that he'd been banned, where did you discover that info?

Edward is a nice, conscientious guy who really has a problem with blurting out the most obnoxious things in public. He has a way of insulting and belittling people he doesn't agree with that goes far beyond the bounds of reasonable public behavior.

This isn't the first time he's been banned and he really does earn it.

He's had a lot of chances to clean up his public interface but he hasn't gotten a handle on it. I'm not surprised he's banned again.

As a Sustaining Member he can choose any "1 line non-commercial signature of Size 1 text and/or links" he likes.

That he calls himself banned does not mean he is banned. May just be one of Ed's pranks.

Do they? I thought this one was one of his weaker ones. I would say: "Even if we cannot tolerate a village idiot in the White House, we should embrace Edward."

    Re: Valley Oak banned? Why?

    Hi Folks,

Edward has overstepped the line of decency and respect several times. And at other time his "blurts" have started interesting discussions and he occasionally posts some very thoughtful and cogent comments.

Recently he posted both a public reply and further private comments that were way out of line to a new member, who had thought this just might be a respectful and conscious community. Needless to say, he was not amused and nor was I.

I wrote Edward to give him a very clear last warning and his email address came back as invalid. I put him on the banned list so that he sees that he needs to contact me before he uses WaccoBB.net again (he will see a message to that effect).

Regarding "Freedom of Speech", I have a pretty wide range of what I can tolerate here. And this forum is intended to "Connect the Conscious Community" it is also intended to serve the progressive community. And we do have our guidelines. It's not for everyone, and I think that is one of the best things about it! I have been very pleased by the quality of people who self-select to join us. You won't find spammers, disrespectful assholes, vocal rightwingers (unless they are very nice and respectful), bad jokes (OK, some slip through), or other forms of officially protected free speech here. And I think that's a good thing. And if you don't, you can go off and start your own website!

In fact that has happened recently. Don1955, who changed his username to thewholetruth after a while (did you ever notice the tendancy to name things what they are not?), was an avid right wing christian conservative who was reasonably respectful for a while so I let him stay. He seemed to have a particular interest in engaging the progressive community. Both his an my patience waned after many, many posts and he started the "Sonoma County Bulletin Board" (https://www.sonocobb.com/) recently. I suggest you check it out if you are in need of "Free Speech".

When I come across something objectionable, or it is reported to me (please report problematic posts to me using the icon on the top of each post on the website) if at all possible I'll move it to the Censored and Uncensored category so people are warned. That category is not included in people's digest by default.

    So there you have it.

Good job, Barry. While I thought Valley Oak occasionally had some very intelligent and interesting things to say, he also seemed to always seemed to lean towards extreme views of blame and victimization.

I began to ignore his threads quite a while back, and although I don't know the incidents that sparked your decision, but there are healthy boundaries that all of us must stay cognizant of and which occasionally must be enforced.

Nature does this all the time. Surfers say you can't bs the ocean. Consequences. Americans don't like consequences and we consistently confuse freedom with license to do whatever we please.

I think this has been generally quite true in the past two years of my participation and it is not easy to accomplish....
