Donald Trump has had a lifelong fear of death. His brother died of alcoholism, which contributed to Donald's death anxiety. He is a germophobe, fearing any deadly contamination that might kill him. Fear of death resides solidly in Trump's unconscious.
Psychology can help us understand how Trump's fear of death transfers into his public policies. Step back a little bit and notice how many of his policies promote death. He is actively, obsessively trying to take away Obamacare and Medicare and Medicaid. All of those will increase death rates. Trump wants to destroy Social Security. That would increase death rates. He wants to eradicate food stamps and other programs that provide people with food and that would increase death rates. He praises armed hooligans who threaten governors and mayors. He promotes opening society during a pandemic which will definitely increase death rates.
To understand Trump just notice how his terror at death expresses itself in his death-promoting policies. Trump is externalizing his own death anxiety by getting others to feel it so he doesn't have to. Trump's process is very primitive. Basically it says I will kill 70,000 (and rising) of you citizens so I don't have to die.
