Re: CVS/Chase - After the approval with conditions

The PAC that is pro-CVS/Chase and plans to support Kathleen Shaffer and Kathy Austin is called Sustainable Sebastopol. I believe it has been discussed previously in this thread as a perfect example of greenwashing.

I hope to see an apology on this thread from the poster of the personal attack below. The fact that a PAC has been formed to help Armstrong/CVS/Shaffer/Austin has been common knowledge for a few weeks now. It is easy to jump to conclusions and speak hastily when filled with passion, but I hope you will acknowledge your error now that is clear that Shepherd's information was not "hogwash" and that he is doing a service to his community, not a "disservice" spreading "unfounded innuendos and hysteria".

This smacks of a lack of foundation for anything that approaches professional journalism. You’re nothing like a reporter; at best you're an editorialist with a very limited agenda. You're baiting the public into thinking that someone might do something at sometime in the future but have offered no proof.

If you really had this information you could at least offer the name of the PAC that is involved with the Sebastopol City Council election. The PACs name is public information and doesn't involve naming sources. PACs are publically registered with a secretary, treasurer, addresses, etc. Who is this PAC that has infected our town?

If you can't even name that then I believe this is all hogwash and you do a disservice to my community with your unfounded innuendos and hysteria.

    Regarding Community Market's "non-profit" status:

    https://srcommunitymarket.com/about.html

    https://srcommunitymarket.com/missionstatement.html

    https://srcommunitymarket.com/businessmodel.html

    https://srcommunitymarket.com/storehistory.html

They are not technically a non-profit in the legal sense.
"Any profit is directed back to the community in the form of donations, discounts and services."

They are not a consumer co-op. They are not worker owned.

They are a great place and community resource. They are worker managed, sort of. They are unique. And they will be a welcome addition to Sebastopol. I hope!

While "Sustainable Sebastopol" is a political (greenwashing) group, it doesn't apear that they are a legal "PAC", but I don't know for sure.

They are indeed a pac. Wouldn't have said so if they weren't. Also, this is no secret. One of their board members got up at the last seb c.c. meeting and said that they had formed a pac named "sustainable sebastopol". . The evidence of this can be found on multiple posts in this thread.

Of course there is (are) a PAC (PACs). They said so in public, as OT stated. This is not a secret, nor is it news.

See recent list for Sebastopol: https://cal-access.sos.ca.gov/Misc/f...RCH=sebastopol

    Anyone can google this, no?

The question asked was what evidence there is for the allegation that CVS or Chase are funding them or anyone else around here?

    Re: a non-profit is different than a not-for-profit. absolutely!

At first I felt like this was a question that wouldn't help the conversation, but I decided to consider it a bit.

While I agree that non-local business of any kind isn't great... I didn't see the value of bringing up something we can't change, however there are 2 historical contexts to consider.

Whole Foods use to be called SaferWay as spoof on Safeway and came from humble origins with a good idea in 1984 when there was a real lack of stores like Whole Foods... especially in Texas.

That was 28 years ago... When they came to Sebastopol I'm not sure, but it is true that they are in a bad location. That probably wasn't as much of an issue then as it is now and will continue to be.

We really do need to be forward thinking about our city planning NOW to avoid making mistakes we will regret in the future.

PS. I don't shop at Whole Foods... I am a raw foodist and most grocery stores just simply don't serve me. I only go there an occasional packaged item that a local grocer can't provide or an off-season item... and a rare meal on the go. They are a SaferWay (lol!) but not the best way!!

Jonathan Greenberg just called to inform me that the new Sebastopol City Council has just passed an "urgent" ordinance (that goes into effect immediately) to prevent any new building permits being issued for drive-throughs. This effectively kills the CVS/Chase project!

I'll post the PD article tomorrow and I hope some of you will chime in with your thoughts.

    UPDATE on the CVS PROJECT

    Name: No_CVS_Chase.png

The CVS project was approved with conditions before last year's election. After the new council was seated they passed a moratorium on new drive-thrus downtown. CVS then sued the city.

CVS has now responded to the conditions, apparently satisfactorily, including adding the door kitty-corner to Mimi's. The council will review their responses at the July 16 meeting (including a public hearing). The project can not go forward as designed while the drive-thru is incorporated in the project (which it still is) as long as the moratorium is in place, which expires at the end of October this year.

For more info, see the staff report here and the July 16th agenda here.

Re: CVS/Chase - After the approval with conditions

So America's 18th largest corporation, CVS, and its frequent partner, America's largest bank, Chase, have sued our small town. They want to control our downtown and suck our dollars out of our county. Other big boxes would be likely to follow, especially next door at the former lumber yard, now tractor store. Appleby's Restaurant has apparently already expressed its interest in own downtown.

Next Tuesday's City Council meeting at the Youth Annex would be important to attend and speak up. From looking at the agenda, it is not clear if the CVS items #8 is a public hearing. If not, people can speak for up to 3 minutes at the beginning of the meeting, or when it is on the agenda.

Do you want the CVS drug-dealers and Chase banksters to control our small town, or would you prefer that the people rule? CVS plans to be open 24 hours a day, selling alcohol and drugs, and have a drive-thru, thus worsening traffic and damaging our downtown.

With wine baron criminal Paul Hobbs expanding his poisonous empire on Watertrough Rd. in the Sebastopol countryside next to schools with 700 students, we are likely to further attract the super-rich to this "Wine Country," where they will destroy our Redwood Empire.

Come and speak up, or at least listen, July 16, Tuesday. Support our courageous City Council to speak truth to power.
    Shepherd

Re: CVS/Chase - After the approval with conditions

The Pellini building has just "been tagged" and CVS must now correct the deteriorated conditions caused by their neglect. CVS had applied for a demolition permit some months ago and was informed no permit would be issued until resolution of the CVS lawsuit against the City regarding the moratorium on drive thrus. The City Council has until mid-October to either let the moratorium expire or to issue a permanent ban on drive thrus. The CVS suit against the City has been moved from State Superior Court to Federal Superior Court.

CVS has now been informed that they must comply with the City's recently approved ordinance requiring solar installations on new commercial buildings .

In a separate action, the process for resolving the suit by Committee for Small Town Sebastopol has, at request of CVS, been extended 12 times since its filing in August, 2011. Currently the Administrative Record on this suit is due on July 23, and final brief by November 8, 2013. Small Town's suit claimed that the traffic study on which the Mitigated Negative Declaration was issued in July, 2011, was inadequate because The Barlow was not included in the study, nor was any traffic beyond High St. to the west of the site.

In a separate matter, CalTrans has yet to receive from CVS a completed application for an encroachment permit to access the site from State Highways 116 and 12.

I think it unconscionable that the existing bottleneck on hwy 12 from Llano Road to the Barlow and beyond has not even been mentioned in any of the traffic studies or environmental reports I've seen...

    FROM SEBASTOPOL TOMORROW:
    Been wondering how you
    can help Stop CVS?

The Barlow, as it grows, will continue to attract locals and visitors who will be enticed to visit our local merchants to shop and dine. This will increase revenues for business and sales taxes for the City. If there is gridlock at the crossroads, visitors will be discouraged and neither the business people nor the City will benefit.

By law, CVS needs CalTrans’ permission to enter/exit from their site (north side Highway 12) onto the two State Highways, 116 (Petaluma Ave) and 12 (Sebastopol Road).CVS has proposed an emergency-vehicle-access-only driveway on 116, and a right turn only out of the site onto Highway 12, but left turns into the site from Highway 12 west.

Left turns into CVS from Hwy 12 would further impede the already vexingly slow traffic on the congested Highway 12 west entrance to town. It would aggravate the already frustratingly slow flow of traffic across Main St. on Highway 12 heading east.

This is bad for business. It’s an unpleasant and unnecessary deterioration of Sebastopol life.

If you agree with this assessment and believe that CalTrans should not grant the encroachment permit to allow such turns from Highway 12, let your Sebastopol Councilperson know, and tell CalTrans they should NOT approve the encroachment permit.

Tell them that the traffic now is already agonizingly slow in the mornings and particularly in the afternoons. Unless we bring CVS to a halt, the CVS plan will bring the 12/116 artery to a halt. Does the town benefit? Whom does CVS serve?

CVS wants to build a store at the intersection of two State Highways, with access across lanes of two way traffic. It would bring gridlock to our small downtown. CVS also insists on drive thrus that will further increase stacking of cars on our busiest streets.
