A study comparing independent businesses to chains and their impact on their communities found that local retail businesses returned an average of 52 percent of their revenue to the local economy. That compared to 14 percent for the chain retailers. It also found that local restaurants re-circulate an average of 79 percent of their revenue locally, compared to 30 percent for chains.
