    Rentals on WaccoBB - RANTing...maybe!

What is up with all the rentals on WaccoBB. Most all of them are "no pets", "no kids", nononono...
How is a great family like mine to find a suitable rental in sonoma county? Me and my wife have been looking for two years!
All the cheaper houses (800-1000$) are "not suitable for a family". I thought the whole idea behind Conscious Community was to support family? I don't see that on WaccoBB. Its not WaccoBB's fault....so whats the deal? I see lots of other family's asking nicely for a rental that is affordable...but they get no response. (including a post by my family here which has 95 views...)
If anyone has some enlightenment to share...please feel free to comment...I know I'm not the only one thinking like this.

In this time of economic hardship I hope the Community can come together and support others better.....
or...am I asking for the wrong things here?

A general attitude of mutual support is good for any community, but dude, supporting your family is your job. I got a vasectomy at age 30 partly because, in addition to my concern about overpopulation, I wasn't absolutely sure I could afford to support a family, so as you can imagine, I'm having a little trouble scraping up as much empathy as I perhaps should have regarding your situation. It's not too late for you to get a vasectomy so as not to further aggravate your dire financial straits (not to mention the overpopulation problem).

Re: rents in Sonoma County--I'm paying $885/month including utilities for a converted garage which is barely big enough for one resident. That's simply reality here in beautiful Sonoma County in 2011; it doesn't mean anyone is screwing or neglecting you. How could you have expected the cheaper houses in any market to be suitable for a family, anyway? Obviously, with rare exceptions, the cheaper houses are going to be too small for a family--that's why they're cheaper. Dig this--the world, and Sonoma County in particular, doesn't owe you the kind of house you want at the price you like; deal with it.

I don't want to sound too harsh on you. Really, as a fellow poor person, I do feel some empathy for you. FWIW, my advice: 1. Don't have any more children. 2. Consider moving to some cheaper area, even out of state if necessary. Most areas are cheaper than Sonoma County. 3. Try not to whine.

    LOL!
So funny, Dixon, this is just the kind of response I was afraid of, Cold, Dry and full of Ego. Oh well.
And BTW, Dixon, who said I was "poor", I would not qualify myself as such.

Quote It's not too late for you to get a vasectomy so as not to further aggravate your dire financial straits
Um... I can't say it any stronger then this... HELLL NO!

The rent thing comes down to this for me and my family: We simply don't want to pay $2000 a month for a rental when average wages are not matching up to get us ahead. This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the fact that I have a kid or cats, and CERTAINLY nothing to do with the fact that I still have my MANHOOD!!! Jeeez....

and another BTW...its called a Rant....not the same as whining.

Yes, rent takes a big chunk out of people's income. It's also a fact that fulfilling the "middle class" American (US) dream of having a 1000-plus sq. ft. home with a separate bedroom for each kid is a luxury compared to how most people in the world live. I know many households in the Latino community here in Sonoma County, that have two or three families sharing the home.

"Full of Ego"? Hmmm, my post doesn't seem egotistic to me, but I could be wrong. Could you specify what I said that seems "full of ego"? Perhaps you're just projecting your own egotism onto me? After all, you're the one who apparently feels that the community owes it to you to give you what you want for a price that meets your needs, regardless of whether that price meets your landlord's needs, and also that you should be able to add children and pets to your family at will without the natural consequence of being denied certain rentals or having to pay more for a larger living space. And, by your own self-description, you're not poor, so it's hard to dredge up much empathy for your perceived financial stress. You just sound like you're spoiled, with delusions of entitlement.

So you're not pleased with my response? What kind of response did you expect? "Oh, you poor boy, innocent victim of a cruel world, here, let me rent you my place at a way below market price, and go ahead, have as many kids as you want; we won't charge you for the extra space you'll need"? Talk about ego, LOL!

Quote Um... I can't say it any stronger then this... HELLL NO!
So for reasons you don't specify, you're vehemently against having a vasectomy. Fine; multiply as much as you want, but here's a news flash: If you make that choice, you don't get to bitch and moan and WHINE when you find that you have less, and more expensive, housing options as a result of your choice--duh!

Quote The rent thing comes down to this for me and my family: We simply don't want to pay $2000 a month for a rental when average wages are not matching up to get us ahead.
Neither does anyone else, but most people don't post self-pitying posts in which they blame the community for their situation while denying that their own choices exacerbate their problem--as you're about to do...

Quote This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the fact that I have a kid or cats...
No? So your being excluded from certain rentals and needing to pay more for a bigger place has nothing to do with your having a kid and cat? For you to say that is just ludicrous.

Quote ...and CERTAINLY nothing to do with the fact that I still have my MANHOOD!!! Jeeez....
And this thing you call "MANHOOD!!!" (just look at those big strong capital letters and those erect exclamation points) apparently depends on being able to reproduce more? That's one of the more pathetic examples of macho I've seen lately.

Quote ...and another BTW...its called a Rant....not the same as whining.
The two aren't mutually exclusive, as you've amply demonstrated. This leaves us with one question: Is it really possible to have "MANHOOD!!!" and be a sniveling, irresponsible whiner at the same time?

Will I ever find a rental in Sonoma county that will not drain my wallet?
Does anyone (besides Dixon) have a good experience renting in Sonoma County? or good contacts?
What are the "tricks" to finding a landlord who would be willing to rent to me and my whole family?
And also...Is WaccoBB the wrong place to be looking for this?

My 3 suggestions in my post #2 in this thread are good ones and are meant seriously.

Here are a couple more suggestions you might find more palatable:

Look over the various links on this Google page:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=%22s...ient=firefox-a
From what you say, you're not poor, so some programs like Section 8 housing may be unavailable to you, but one or more of the listed agencies may have good info/connections for you.

Your post that you linked to looked pretty good, so if WaccoBB.net didn't generate any hits for you, you might try posting it on the North Bay section of Craigslist and on the local wacco-bb Yahoo group (not the same as this WaccoBB.net site--it has less participants, but some of them aren't on this site).

Quote PS> I am sorry if I offend anyone about the manhood comment...not my intention.
Yeah, dude, that sounded really weird. I'm still trying to figure out what your issue with vasectomy is, LOL!

My brother a local "income property" owner i,e, landlord, says that print media is no longer the place to list offerings. Craiglist is it.

I've had good luck with bulletin boards, at Community Market, Santa Rosa. Coffee shops, bookstores and grocery stores. I have twice done intensive searches in Santa Rosa and the West County. I had to look at a LOT S&%# boxes at outrageous prices, before finding anything even remotely acceptable. And I'm just a lone wolf.

Yes, prices are high, it's expensive to live here. Families have been leaving for over a decade, to parts more economical. I hear Lake County is more affordable. Now, if you're a Trustista, it might not be as much of a problem!

No offense to Barry, or Waccos in general, but posting on Wacco has never produced us a renter while we have to fend off the volume of responses from Craigslst

We rent out most of our large rural house and set our rental rates to cover mortgage fees, taxes, insurance, and upkeep. Our rates are still lower than many, but we rent a lovely 400 sq'+ studio for 700+ dollars, at that.

Our take on the Conscious rental looks like this:

Unconscious roommate wanted for large rural house
    roommate wanted: incapable of verbal
    communication,
insensitive to chemicals, high voltage electrical
fields, no medical marijuana users, no people
    willing
to exchange massages, energy healings, life
co-ordinating or crystal readings for rent.
We would like someone who is colorless,
    odorless,
and invisible till rent day. EFT payment is
    encouraged
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
and all our tenants are very happy, as far as we know

As far as rental go to the RANTER, I left the Bay-Area 3yrs. ago due to my husbands death, I was raised and born in SF, and lived my last 2oyrs. before my husband passed in Pacifica at the Coast. I have always loved the Sonoma area, from Marin to Russian River, but sadly enough it is TRUE, I visited a friend and family 3 wks. ago I was so HOME SICK, and really want to come back and LIVE, and in the Sonoma Area, I now reside in Sparks, NV, which I rent a house for $800, a month on a lot of land, upstairs, downstairs, big yard its amazing the difference in what you can rent for up here, I still want to get back down to the bay-area, all my family is their but I too ck. RENTS you really have to do your home-work and resource I have just started on this website and on Craigslist, I too have 2 small dogs. But the comment about the V was so immature, don't put children into the mix that is your choice. Good Luck to you! I'm still seaching!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear you and totally agree. Sebastopol is a great town to raise a family. But it is also a hard nut to crack as far as getting in there, but it is possible.
I lived there for 5 years in a roomy place on Washington for 500 a month. I have a place on the coast, now, a roomy 2 bedroom house with land all around that costs 1000. So you can find places, but there is a price and that price is perseverance. put up flyers around town. and do this wacco thing along with craigslist and facebook.
People are looking for you to rent. Youve got to hang in there....Sebastopol is well
    worth the hassle.

Well, I clearly didn't give him the answer he wanted to hear (that he's an innocent victim of landlords who are mean for not being willing to rent to him at below-market rates), but I must insist I gave good advice, especially considering that my advice was meant not just for him, but for anyone who might read it. Heaven forbid that I should point out that his situation is a natural consequence of his choices and that part of the solution might be to make different choices! I stand by everything I said, dude. For you to characterize my response as "railing" on him is simplistic and negativistic. And regarding your suggestion that I "shut the fuck up"--the situations in which saying that could be considered a constructive response are few and far between, and this ain't one of them. But since you seem pretty comfortable slinging that phrase around, I'll just suggest that you follow your own advice.

Re: Rentals on WaccoBB - RANTing...maybe!

Here's my advice: Drive the backroads and stop when you see "for rent" signs. Talk to people, as you may stumble upon a great word-of-mouth recommendation. There are great opportunities in western Sonoma County but these treasures are not typically found advertising here, on craigslist or elsewhere. If you truly want to live in Sonoma County, get to know it, be patient, be fearless and you'll find something. You might try bulletin boards (the physical kind) at neighborhood stores in Bodega (that's Bodega, not Bodega Bay), Occidental and Graton. Drive around Camp Meeker. See if anything is posted at or near the Villa Grande post office. Look in Monte Rio.

There are extraordinary hidden gems (I've lived in one for 24 years) here; you just have to be genuinely creative or incredibly lucky to find them.

Best of luck. I love Sonoma County and would not live anywhere else in this country.

Re: Rentals on WaccoBB - RANTing...maybe!

I must say that when i first discovered wacco i was delighted. i thought i had found a locally focused forum that could end up being very useful. After a short while i noticed that there are a couple members that seem to use the site as a forum to attack people. I have been attacked as well. These folks seem to have an unlimited amount of time to pick a post apart sentence by sentence with ruthless intensity. In my opinion they have ruined the open and accepting forum that I thought wacco was. No topic seems safe from being targeted. Some of the posts are political, or emotionally charged while others are merely statements. I feel it is a form of cyber bullying and doesn't help to support an open dialogue. I have thought about responding to posts and have refrained because I wasn't interested in the energetic vampirism. Of course this my perspective. Im curious what others feel about this. A friend calls folks like this internet trolls. Their mission seems to be to stir up a negative reaction, like their simply looking for a fight. Sounds pretty accurate to me.

From my perspective your post was completely within your right. You were expressing what you have experienced and how you feel about it. I did not feel you were asking to be carried merely asking for this community to consider each others well being. You are not the first to feel that the housing market can be exclusive. Family friendly housing can be hard to find bottom line, and if you have animals be ready to pay a lot more and even less available. I feel for you and wish you the best of luck. I don't have any insight on how to secure housing here but surely you'll find something eventually. Simply put the market here is slim pick'ns.

I hope you and your family find exactly what you're looking for!

    warm regards, renee

since you explicitly ask for how others feel about this - and since I've certainly made my share of posts taking issue with certain people's stances:

There's a distinct difference between "attack" and dispute. It's fairly common for someone to make a post that either attempts to convince people of something, or at least to make a statement of a political or social position. Those are invitations for others to express opposing views, but some OPs seem to only want to hear hallelujahs from the choir.

I do agree with you to some extent, though. Although Dixon's contributions are wide-ranging and always interesting, in the specific case you mentioned I think it was a bit gratuitous to bring in population control. I suspect it surprised the OP to have that a part of the response. In other cases, discussions can get rather heated and the rhetoric can get a bit personal. It's pretty rare for that to get out of hand, though - usually there's a fairly slow build where people respond in a similar tone to what's come before.

As far as 'troll' goes, though, I don't see much of that here. There are several posters who take pretty predictable points of view, and keep up with regular contributions on those themes. But if anything, we'd benefit from more of those, not fewer, so more perspectives could be represented.

There are a lot of different categories on this site. The disputatious threads are (generally) limited to only a few. I'm sympathetic to those who find controversy and challenges upsetting, though - maybe there could be some categories where posts can only receive gratitude, not rebuttals? That could give a home for those who are simply looking for like-minded company to share their thoughts.
