The Dirtiest Thing You'll See Online

Barry: do we have any info on how the servers and such supporting Waccobb are being powered?
    ------------------
Apple, Amazon and Microsoft are leaders when it comes to innovative technology. While their products are cutting edge, their giant data centers use the oldest, dirtiest power source on the planet -- coal.

Help them clean up their act:

No I don't, but I'll try to find out. But rather than "servers" we are using a part of just one server. It's a pretty small digital/kilowatt footprint!

If it is not a lot of trouble, it would be good to know how it is being powered.

Server farms and small data centers can use up a lot of energy to power the equipment and to get rid of the heat that these devices create. this could be an opportunity to walk the talk and foster positive change.

In this mild climate, a data center could be cooled by passive solar and convection-driven air changes c. 350 days per year. Of course, have a roof covered with PV arrays would be a big step toward reducing the "dirty" power footprint -- and a good marketing tactic.

The Wacco server is hosted by Servint. I believe the power comes from the power utility. The server company though does make efforts to be green:
    • Virtualization, the basis of ServInt's VPS and Flex Series green hosting environments, uses far less energy by consolidating sites onto more efficient host machines, and allowing us to decommission hardware that is less environmentally-friendly.
    • All of our hosting solutions use only high-performance, low-voltage servers, reducing energy requirements and carbon emissions.
    • ServInt recycles 100 percent of all recyclable hardware components and meets or exceeds environmental requirements for the disposal of all non-recyclable, hazardous components.
    • ServInt contributes to reforestation projects at levels exceeding the overall draw of our VPS infrastructure by at least 10 percent.

Thanks for following up on this, Barry! It is good to know that ServInt has thought about it and taken reasonable action into this issue.
