I first met Michael and Justine Toms close to 30 years ago, when I was living in Ukiah. They had just moved into the area, and mutual friends introduced us. At the time, they were still operating their New Dimensions Radio programs out of Gate Five in Sausalito. We soon learned that we had many interests in common, and I was thrilled to learn that they were in the business of bringing the newly “discovered” focus on consciousness and spiritual awareness to the world at large, through the medium of radio.
They would interview all kinds of amazing spiritual teachers, and leading-edge thinkers like Joseph Campbell, Buckminster Fuller, people like Jean Houston, Ken Wilbur--Zen Roshis, Tibetan Buddhist lamas, monks from many traditions, and more. This was at a time when Transpersonal Psychology was beginning to take root, and places like JFK University, The Institute for Noetic Sciences, The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology and of course, CIIS, were beginning to grow and develop in the Bay Area. It was a
magnet for all kinds of leaders and teachers in the fields of psychology and spirituality. New Dimensions would interview these people, therapists and others, then their programs would be played on radio stations all over the world. What a great idea! To bring words of wisdom to the masses! To make great ideas available to all!
Eventually, the Toms bought a house in Ukiah, and moved their office there. We had many friends in common, and I often attended gatherings and discussion groups at their gracious home in Ukiah. They would host events at which we would all think about and discuss various personal aspects of learning to be more “conscious” in the world. What did it mean? How could we open our minds and more-- our hearts-- to others outside of our own comfort zone? Many of the ideas I hear discussed today at similar gatherings here in Sonoma County, I first heard about through the Toms’ and New Dimensions, so long ago.
And now, through the same misfortune that has befallen so many of us in this difficult time, New Dimensions must move. That gracious home was just recently foreclosed upon by the bank, and because they also have friends and connections here in the Sebastopol area, they decided this would be their next home. This has been a painful move for them-- they are in their late 60’s or early 70’s, and they also have some health issues-- to say nothing of the emotional anguish of losing their home of 24 years. The enormity of this task has mostly fallen to Justine to accomplish since she is the more physically able of the two, and when I read her words in the New Dimensions March Newsletter (which I hope is reprinted here), especially her cry “I feel like a train that has run out of track...” I wanted to weep!
I wish to welcome and honor these friends, these people who have been pioneers in the whole consciousness movement, who are now Elders, who are still bringing us wisdom, hope, and the joy of knowledge. This is what I am asking of all who may be reading this,-- these folks are now in our midst; they are now becoming a part of our community! Let’s open our hearts to them in support and welcome!
You don’t have to become a subscriber to New Dimensions, but if you can send them any amount, small or even large, there is a PayPal link at the end of this post. Any donation you do send, is tax-deductible, and will be gratefully received.
DEATH OF THE OLD, ENTER THE NEW
by Justine Willis Toms
For those who do not know, we have been "forced" to move both our home and our office. We are relocating to the Santa Rosa/Sebastopol, CA area which is 50 miles south of Ukiah. We’ve been located in Ukiah for over 24 years and have been blessed with an enormous amount of storage area in our present location. The downside has been the fact that we’ve not had to make any decisions about what to keep and what to let go. So, the accumulation of papers, books, and just "stuff" is humongous. I’ve been sorting, tossing, and making decisions on every little thing for months now and my brain feels like it’s fried. I feel like I’m a train that has run out of track. So, the angels have, once again, brought to me some help in the form of an interview.
Michael and I have always said the perfect interviews come at just the right time for what we need to hear. The truth is we get as much wisdom from our guests as do our listeners. For example: this week I’ll be doing an interview with David Bennett, author of Voyage of Purpose: Spiritual Wisdom from Near-Death back to Life (Findhorn Press 2012). I'm just now starting to read the book and I'm struck by the fact that I'm going through a metaphoric near-death as I step out of the old and enter the new. I’m sure you can see how this is a perfect book and interview for me at this time of "crisis." Even in my exhausted and muddled state, I know it will help me see the gifts awaiting me on the other side of this life-changing move. You’ll be hearing about his extraordinary story in April.
In the meantime, we still need financial help to get us through this move... We need an immediate cash inflow of $4000. Two weeks ago we asked for $5000 and a financial angel donated $1000. For this we are grateful. However, we still need another $4000. It would be a tremendous blessing if four of you who are reading this can donate $1000 each. Or eight of you $500 each... or whatever it is you can contribute, no matter how small. Any financial contribution will go to help us keep on producing and distributing inspiring dialogues for a better world. Here’s the link.
