HOW TO CATCH A RABBIT
We're down in the alleyway hanging on the wall
the dank filthy tunnel where day in day out
we watch what comes in slide on by
sometimes sluggish, tending to hang around
resisting the lazy current
the polluted river slogging through
Coliforms and offal - brutal bitter bile
hitching a ride, winking at the demons
as they drift on down the turgid road
We're tweaked and troubled -
too much rubs us the wrong way
We irritate easily
and we're compelled to strike out
to eat into the wall
to nip at the meat that threatens us
to chew at the flesh that anchors us
Infuses us with sinuous dreams
of cold naked lights and teeth that burn
And we wink at tomorrow's torment
in our coal black lair
Long nights run into night
the carrion humping along
while rot and detritus seep into the wall
where we lick and lap at its juice
....and then the End of Days
The tunnel heaves
a bottomless sigh of submission
soundlessly flickering
then exploding with
brilliant pinpoints of light
bright as a billion suns and the Rabbit,
neck ensnared, its hapless reality
changed forever as one by one
a ring of fire cauterizes the flesh
jolts us with a shock wave of separation
as we spin through the abyss
Plump little polyps probed
poked, labeled "pre-cancerous"
a pathologist's plaything
Hung out to dry - dessicated, dying
never to realize our juicy dream
of being someone's Nightmare
without end
