This Sat, Jan. 9, 10am — People and Planet Before Profit: Public Banking Webinar
Hosted by the CA Public Banking Alliance (CPBA):
Public banking can play a vital role in pandemic relief and recovery. It can also be used to fund affordable housing, transitions to clean energy, retraining oil workers for jobs in wind and solar, and more.
The California Public Banking Alliance is convening two conversations with national experts to explore the role public banking can play in winning economic and ecological justice.
Panel 1 — Putting People and Planet Before Profit
• Emily Kawano and Mike Strode of the US Solidarity Economy Network will discuss a suite of reforms that are already being used to democratize the economy (public banking, community land trusts, worker cooperatives, participatory budgeting, times banks).
Panel 2 — Public Banks, Fossil Fuel Divestment and Community Reinvestment
• Reina Tello of People Organizing to Demand Environmental and Economic Rights (PODER) will discuss the importance of public banking in providing COVID-19 recovery and an economic lifeline for peoples’ needs, such as financing affordable housing, investing in small businesses, and rebuilding a just economy.
• Sylvia Chi of Asia Pacific Economic Network (APEN) on how public banks can support energy efficiency and affordable housing, clean energy and a just transition, as well as other Environmental Justice Priorities.
