Two nuclear power stations in landfall path of Hurricane Florence

Why stopping nuclear power and weapons is TOP of the list - with so much else. Jude
Two nuclear power stations in landfall path of Hurricane Florence

The Union of Concerned Scientists is warning that two potentially vulnerable coastal nuclear power stations at Brunswick Units 1 and 2 in South Port, NC andSurry Units 1 and 2 in Rushmore, VA are in the direct path of Hurricane Florence. Of concern, UCS reports that the operators of both Brunswick, two GE Mark I boiling water reactors and Surry, two Westinghouse pressurized water reactors, have not publicly documented that they successfully completed flood protection upgrades required by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the aftermath of Japan's March 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. The Brunswick units are nearly identical in design and construction to the Fukushima units that were destroyed in explosions and meltdowns resulting from the prolonged loss of electrical power caused by a massive earthquake and tsunami. A storm surge of 9 to 13 feet is anticipated at the location of the Brunswick units simultaneous to the prolonged flooding from inundating rain. Hurricane force winds are expected to knock out the electrical grid servicing the nuclear power stations' safety systems, placing the reactors on emergency power.
Stop Uranium Mining and Transport! Intertribal Gathering at Red Butte, Havasupai Canyon, Arizona

Our friend and colleague, Ian Zabarte, Secretary of the Native Community Action Council, has asked us to distribute a flier from the Havasupai, Guardians of the Grand Canyon. As the flier makes clear, October 5, 2018 is for Tribal Members only (closed to the public), but October 6-7 is open to the public. The flier includes a map showing Canyon Mine uranium haul routes, through Navajo lands and adjacent to Hopi lands, to the White Mesa Mill in Utah, adjacent to Ute Mountain Utes land. The three day agenda includes speakers, a forum, ceremonies, sweat lodges, entertainment, and a fun run/walk. Campsites are available, but you must bring your own camping gear, chairs, water, and food. Alcohol and drugs are not allowed. The event is sponsored by the Havasupai Tribal Council, "To Honor and Protect Our Sacred Land, Our Children, and Our Future." For more info., contact the Havasupai Tribal Council at (928) 448-2731. Help oppose Japan radioactive water dumping

Despite almost unanimous opposition at recent hearings, there is mounting concern i n Japan that TEPCO might still dump more than a million tonnes of radioactive water contaminated with tritium into the Pacific Ocean. The water has accumulated in hundreds of tanks on the overcrowded Fukushima Daiichi nuclear site and, as tritium is radioactive hydrogen, it cannot be removed from water. The Association for Citizens and Scientists Concerned about Internal Radiation Exposures, led by Kyoto University Professor Emeritus of physics, Kosaku Yamada, are asking the international anti-nuclear community to sign onto their resolution opposing the dumping of tritiated water at all costs. The group fears authorities are waiting for an unguarded moment to dispose of the radioactive water. You can lend your support to the resolution by sending an email to Professor Yamada expressing your opposition to the dumping. More
