"Whale Rider"--DVD recommendation

One of the best films that I have seen on overcoming sexism, by direct, sustained action, is “Whale Rider.” It is the story of an indigenous Maori girl in New Zealand, Pai. She loves her grandfather, the tribal chief. Though there are touching scenes between them, he will not train or allow her to become the chief, to which Pai is clearly entitled by her wisdom and strength.

Fortunately, Pai’s wise grandmother also supports her, standing up to the patriarchal chief. Any victory over sexism—in its many forms—is a victory for all generations, cultures, and genders that live under the assault of sexism and rigid gender roles, which ultimately deprive all genders of our fullness.

If you have not seen this 2003 film, or only seen it once, it is well worth experiencing how love, persistence, and strength can help overcome sexism and open positions of leadership for women. I just returned it to the Rohnert Park public library; the Sebastopol library also has a copy. You can borrow either from any Sonoma County public library. Be prepared to drop some tears, even if you have been taught “big boys do not cry.”
