Donations to Hopkins and spending by her allies far outpaced Evans, an attorney who relied on her deep roots with organized labor and environmental groups and name recognition from her two decades in politics, including 10 years representing the North Coast in the Legislature.

The outcome Tuesday reflects the political evolution of west county, where liberal groups aligned with progressive causes have long held sway, said David McCuan, a Sonoma State University political scientist.

Lynda Hopkins has gone right into the belly of Sonoma County’s progressive, activist beast and slayed that dragon … with Hopkins, the district becomes more moderate, McCuan said. Noreen Evans is an excellent fit in that district, with her experience and support from environmentalists and labor, but she has not been able to win over voters.”

I thought it was just my imagination, but it turns out West County is no longer Left County. I feel sad for the progressive, activist dragon, now slain.

I reject the notion that Hopkins has anything to do with Trump.

I still think she is a promising young leader (we're going to need a lot more of those!) whose heart is in the right place despite her "backers". We'll now see how she leads. If she paves over paradise, in any fashion, I'll be protesting right along with you, but until that time I support her and I urge everybody to give her "an open mind and a chance to lead". My hope is that she brings some fresh ideas that honors our values and moves past the calcified positions of the left that we can embrace.

To be clear, the quote above about slaying the dragon, is from "David McCuan, a Sonoma State University political scientist", not "they". That's one guy's opinion who is not associated with the campaign.

This is fallacious to equate Hopkins with Trump... cute, but simplistic & wrong thinking.

The way wins for Hopkins and Trump are similar is that they both were against elite Democrats that had baggage. Interestingly, many of their supporters were union members voting against candidates their unions supported. Since unions today are increasingly known for their government members rather than private industry members, they carry the burden of identification with the problem rather than the solution.

I did not "equate Hopkins with Trump". I said that their campaigns were the same, just as you said -- they are both 1%ers running against established politicians.

It was widely reported that Trump's supporters in the mid west included many former union members who lost their jobs as manufacturing moved to China. Bill Clinton's support of NAFTA, and financial deregulation (repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, and omission of controls on derivatives... which contributed to the financial collapse of 2007) contributed to a loss of support for Hillary from those voters.

Locally, SEIU's support for Noreen Evans was insufficient to win her election. SEIU's support for her seemed to create a shadow over her (that she was union's self serving candidate), rather than support.

Vested interests in mining, wine, realty - the extractive industries - are similar to both campaigns. Sarah Palin for Secretary of the Interior?! And Tommy, where is your source for your statement that union members were voting against candidates supported by their unions?

Having read so many incredibly inappropriate and offensive posts issuing from Lisa as a union representative, my guess would be that she successfully alienated scores of voters on this site and probably elsewhere. But they'll always have their memories of making all those really crafty signs.

Really? Barry tried closing the last thread with equanimity only to be hit by a wave of snark and hostility. Now Samba begins a provocative new thread, to which Tommy, with whom I don't typically agree, responds with a reasonable and measured rebuttal, and you ask Barry to address us?

I'm going to close this post-election thread as well. There's plenty of hurt feelings, resentments and judgements to go around. I think it's best wrap up this second discussion of such feelings and let the wounds heal as we turn our attention to the future. I don't think there is anything to be gained to continue this pitched battle.
