EU considering banning seed saving and seed sharing??

I have been doing some research on this issue and by all accounts so far, it appears to be true.
Can anyone prove to me that this is not an issue? And wasn't this part of that farm bill from 2010 SB S510 here in the US?
If this goes through I can only imagine the ramifications. It would be horrendous. Talk about Orwellian.
Sometime in the future, when people will say "How the hell did we get here?" this may be one of those turning points.
Unless... please tell me we aren't going down that dead end road.

    Here's a petition from Avaaz.org:

From what I've read May 6th is a deadline of sorts. I certainly signed this one.

    "We will not comply!!"
They say it is nearly a done deal. At about 4:20 this video really gets going.

Re: EU considering banning seed saving and seed sharing??

    Hi Claire,

The current petition on Avaaz (We will not comply) is a bit confusing to me.
A few weeks ago I read a petition that Monsanto , Syngenta and others had tried once again to hold the patents on life in the EU,( fruit and vegetable seeds) and that no one could own or use them without corporate permission.
This was met by millions of people signing requests to the EU to put a stop to them.

As you may know, they have been trying this for years now and succeeded in some ways in North America, for example when GMO corn drifts onto neighboring properties, they sue the farm it drifted to.

I am not sure about the new petition (We Will Not Comply), IMO it cannot hurt to keep constant pressure on them, as when one attempt to control seed fails they simply try another.

I cannot help but wonder how successful they would be if they actually worked with the interests of farmers and global citizens instead of the corporate espionage that is practiced.

Also many wise, fun events happen at the West County Seed Bank. I am betting they are in the know.
    Andrea

Just for clarification, SB510, which was the US Senate version of House Bill HR2751 or "Food Modernization Safety Act", might have had some bad things in it but banning seed saving was not one of them. This issue was previously debunked in this forum. You can read about it on Snopes.com here:

    https://www.snopes.com/politics/business/organic.asp

From my research so far it appears that the proposed EU regulation is more insidious, and while allowing home gardeners to save seed and to give saved seed away to other home gardeners, it places restrictions on commercial seed to only "registered" varieties. It apparently goes before the EU Commission today (May 6). Here is one link with more info:
