    HONEST Mechanic wanted

    Hi there,

I searched for this on WACCO but no one seems to reply to these posts, but I'm looking for an honest mechanic in or around Sebastopol. Have had some ridiculous experiences with some of the better known shops and just need someone to run a computer diagnostic and tell me why my check engine light is on as I think it is a fluke and don't want to spend $400 for nothing....Thanks in advance

Many different models have the means to read out a trouble code in flashing lights on your dashboard by turning your ignition on and off three times ( turn it to just before where the starter engages) Find out on the internet what your vehicles method is then you write the sequence down and find out what the code means on a search.

I think that I saw an ad from Midas offering to interpret that for free. It's quite a trivial thing for them to do, but gets you into their shop, and of course they're hoping for the repair work. I'm not 100% sure the ad was from Midas, so you should phone beforehand.

FWIW I've been told that its only critical to get the thing fixed if the light is flashing.

Lots of shops will give you a free reading of the check engine code.
Most will tell you it is not the whole picture and want to charge an hour minimum to tell you what is REALLY wrong. I head great success with the friendly people at NAPA auto parts.
And also there was a very helpful fellow from Lange's automotive that talked to me about the code and what it meant for free.

Thanks for all your replys! I was able to figure out that there is an exhaust hole somewhere. Got a recommendation for the traveling mechanic - though any other shops that people have had a good experience I am open to. Thanks!

For honest and reliable and thorough, trustworthy help with any automotive issue, I call Kate at K-Tech Automotive. She's always patient to fully explain all my options and help me decide what to do, and when. Priceless!

I highly recommend Elvis Shipman in Santa Rosa. He works from his garage and does excellent conscientious work for very reasonable prices. Really nice guy too, with a young family. Call him at 707-318-1330.
