    What's up w KPFA?

I am interested in any information or opinions on the ongoing battles with the KPFA recall election. I understand the election was to remove Tracy Rosenberg, KPFA Bd member and Treasurer, due to her cutting back the Morning Show. Then I think in August the Alameda Co Superior Ct, issued a restraining order in counting the ballots.

Controversy can be healthy. It can also be a waste of precious resourses. As a long time support, I have heard some real marginalized content, in my opinion, one interview with an Oakland ex con former drug dealer who spoke of the glories of being a drug dealer. Plus some of the political content represents very marginalized points of view, which may shape the whole, but I think on a priority scale, would rank at the bottom. No doubt it's a balance, running a radio station of this nature. Any thoughts or opinoins? Is is the Trotskyits fighting the Bolshevicks?

I was just coming here with the same question. (ballots arrived today so no surprise I guess) Does anyone have any good arguments for voting one way or the other? I really haven't been paying attention and won't vote unless I hear some convincing arguments about why to vote and for whom.
    Thanks,
    Marty

The election to recall Tracy Rosenberg was cancelled because the wrong voters list was used in violation of the by-laws. The current election is the regular LSB election. See https://campaign.r20.constantcontact...OmPNl0bu0c8%3D for Carol Spooner's recommendations. Democracy is only as good as the effort we put into supporting it.

Alas, this might be more confusing than helpful, but ... I received something in the mail last week (?). It was called 'Save KPFA' and signed by just about everyone I listen to. The slate they recommended was full of incumbents, but I don't know where I put the letter, and ballot doesn't say who are incumbents. Will post more if/when I locate said letter. Did anyone else get it?

I'm getting all the stuff in the mail - just don't know what to make of it. I guess if Robbie Osmond makes a rec, I would go with that - he's my favorite show.

    Re: What's up w KPFA?

Thanks for the links to the two KPFA groups. However, it's very confusing - the two sides have different supposed facts. United for Community Radio says that the fiscal crisis is a result of KPFA hiring many people when contributions were high and not being willing to lay any off when the income didn't support it. This is on their website, and also what I had read in emails sent out by Carol Spooner. Since I respect Carol Spooner for her role in helping to save Pacific from the forces that were trying to coopt it and water it down a decade or so ago, I have a strong tendency to support the candidates in this group.

However, the SaveKPFA faction claims the problem is mismanagement by Pacifica, and Pacifica taking KPFA funds. It would be easy to dismiss these claims, but the endorsers include many people I respect.

How can we find out the actual facts in the situation? Both sides present a good case, but at least one of them is misleading us. The two sides have platforms that look entirely compatible, yet obviously they have very different approaches. What are the actual facts? Which group is more likely to keep KPFA as a viable voice in the progressive community? Who can we trust?

There's a great article by Tracy Rosenberg in Counterpunch about Dan Siegel of SaveKPFA.

    Re: What's up w KPFA?

Thank you for these links. Reading some of the info, it seems to be a complex situation, between Pacific and KPFA, competing slates, no doubt made more difficult by the tough economy.

As to the cancellation of the vote to remove the Board Treasurer Tracy Rosenberg, due the the wrong voter list being used, I recall seeing that the cost of the vote was $26k. It is unfortunate that that money went up in smoke, given the tight budgets. Is there any explanation of this screw up? Has KPFA made any announcements about the failed election?

As a long time listener & supported, I'd appreciate anyone's brief summary of the chaos at KPFA and Pacifica.
