Thefts from unlocked cars in Sebastopol - Lock Your Car! :(

Sorry to harsh your V-Day mellow, but Sebastopol Police Chief Jeff Weaver alerted me to a serious problem and asked that I pass along this bit of disturbing news: There's been a rash of thefts from unlocked cars recently in Sebastopol:

This weekend, at least nine unlocked vehicles were entered in Sebastopol and items were stolen from within.

The thefts happened on Maytum Avenue, Vine Avenue, McFarlane Avenue, Willow Street, Fircrest Avenue, and Jewell Avenue.

All of the vehicles were unlocked; no locked vehicles were entered.

If you could encourage folks in the waccobb community to lock their vehicles, it would be wonderful.

I’m happy that people feel safe enough in Sebastopol that they do not lock their vehicles but they should.

There are four easy crime prevention tips people should follow:

☛ Lock their vehicles
☛ Don’t leave valuable items in vehicles
☛ Install motion lights adjacent to where vehicles are parked if possible.
☛ Report suspicious activity (i.e. people peering into parked vehicles, people checking the locks on parked vehicles, people hiding from passing vehicles, etc.)

This saddens me. Not only is it a theft of goods from people cars, it's a theft of our collective sense of safety.

Many unlocked Cars were stolen from on Washington Ave last month.

A few weeks ago my son left his car unlocked at the far end of DuFranc, which is in the County, not City. He and 3 others had their contents stolen that night. They even took his registration.

Yes thats what I am worried about but the police dont see how that would help the would be identity theives. I dont trust that the police have all the answers, identity theft was my first thought also.

Hmmm... they have your mailing address, which is probably also your residence address, the license plate and VIN of your vehicle, and your full name. That's a real good start to getting credit in your name or having your vehicle registration redirected to their address. It might be possible to use it to create a phony title for a stolen car, too. The possibilities are all too numerous! Did you advise the DMV about the theft of the registration slip?

If your residence address is on the reg slip you might want to review the security on your home. After all, they might be thinking that if you leave your car unlocked you may not lock up your house either.
