$40.00 a pound salmon... No big deal??

I had a lovely piece of Thai Barbecue Salmon from the Whole Foods deli yesterday.
The sign next to it said 9.99 a piece only the "a piece" was in such small letters that
    I didnt see it..

As I was so hungry, I didnt pay attention to the details or small writing... Afterwards I
looked at my receipt and was sure it was a mistake.

The piece was 4 oz... and it wasnt even wild salmon.
I figured that if I got at the most 10 tiny pieces, that would be 4.00 a bite...
Kind of made me sick after that..

The best part,,, was when I brought it up to a manager, she said that she
didnt think it was too much money! "People seem to like it" .
I wonder if they looked at their bill if it would still be as tasty...

Another reason not to shop there. Ok.. Im feeling a bit better... Thanks !

You can usually buy fresh wild salmon at Fircrest Market (not cooked) for 8.99-12.99#.

You mean Whole Paycheck? When the Santa Rosa store opened, I went in for a quick look around.
How much would you expect to pay for an artichoke? An organic artichoke (hopefully not from China...where Whole Paycheck sources their other "organic" veggies)?
Would you believe 2/$6.00 was the sign on the basket of artichokes?

It's all part of devious marketing to snag the consumer. I've paid $3 for a nice size artichoke,
so 2 for $6 isn't an outrageous price, but it's done in this way to make the shopper think it's a sale.

I was in Olivers Rohnert Park last week, and saw a big front end display of large size Best Foods Mayo

Sale price...$5.99, a big savings...reduced from $7.99. I only shop at Olivers for their sales, but this
    wasn't a bargain.

I continue to see prices jumping way up, not just a few cents, but dollars!

I went to Wholefoods in Petaluma (while in a hurry, away from home in Santa Rosa, and wanting to get some natural food (normally I go to Olivers or Community Market). I saw the same salmon you are talking about and thought "Oh, 9.99 a pound!" then I read carefully and saw it was "per piece!" and saw that it was like 4 oz like you said. I did not buy it. I walked through the store shocked at prices, finding nothing on sale at all. Just drove up to Olivers on way home instead.

Oops, actually the salmon in whole foods I was looking at was not cooked - maybe it was 6.99 a piece that caught my eye and I thought it was per pound but not. Still outrageous for 6.99 for 4oz. (that's $21 per pound uncooked).

When I went back today to make sure I wasnt imagining this ... The sign actually read "ea"
in very small font.. If this isnt meant to mislead,, I dont know what is.

Is this sushi-grade, inspected salmon that is meant to be eaten raw?

Sorry, the math just bothered me a bit, so I fixed it in the quote.

Sounds like a drag to discover that which has already been devoured cost more than anticipated! At whole foods, it is outrageously priced at $ 24.99 and is the best fish I have ever tasted. It is called black cod, was called sable when I was a child back east and we had it smoked like lox only better.

No, it was regular salmon to bake in the oven and what not.

I have to chime in here-
artichokes grow like weeds here, one plant cost about $2, & needed almost no tending and fed us chokes in spring-summer for 7 years.(Until I neglected to divide it into 2 plants.)

    dividing artichoke plants?

    forgive my horticultural ignorance:
how does one divide a plant that has a single large stalk? Or do the 'chokes sprout new stalk-ettes and that's how you know it is time to divide them?
