Do you miss the KPFA Morning Show?

If you are a subscriber you can sign a petition that moves KPFA towards getting back the Morning Show. Search "SaveKPFA" and you will find the petition. Just sign it and send it in.

"SaveKPFA" and "KPFAWorker" are the front names for the faction in the Station Wars which I consider the "entrenched staff". As usual, there are more sides to the story. Check out this website:

As a long-time supporter of KPFA, the world's best radio station, I urge everyone to look at both sides of the issue. Check out the link from Miles as well as those from my old friend Barrie. And keep in mind that if you decide what faction or policy to support solely on whether your favorite show will come back, your reasoning is self-centered and ignores some important issues.

Thanks, Miles, for posting the link to Robbie Osman's statement regarding the Morning Show (see link above) and some history that led up to the decision to make changes. I encourage people who are taken in by the misnamed “SaveKPFA” and the “KPFAworker” sites, to please read what Robbie had written.

The KPFA Local Station Board (LSB) met in Rohnert Park a couple of weeks ago. The date and time was posted on WaccoBB. KPFA listeners who are interested in knowing about the internal workings of the station could have attended to learn more sides to what is occurring at the station and Pacifica.

I don't miss The Morning Show. I really appreciate the new format. I have an hour commute in the morning and would rather hear "hard" news information than shows about art and culture and SF Bay area events. Also I have been following the struggles that have been occurring at KPFA for some years now. SF Indybay has some good information about the history and the nefarious tactics used by the Save KPFA slate. I hope the new programming stay's as is.

Please check out the KPFA Worker web site as well as SaveKPFA. If you just read what Miles recommends you will get just one side of the story. I am not into convincing people one way or another, you need to make up your own mind. However I hope that you take in all the information. Lots of times things are not as simple as they seem.

Re: Do you miss the KPFA Morning Show?

I have previously gone to kpfaworker and savekpfa and read what they have to say. The Myths and Facts article at https://supportkpfa.i941.net/?page_id=2 only confirmed my original impression that the material on these sites is misleading and self-serving.

I find the attacks on the interim general manager and program director gratuitous and counterproductive. These people inherited a difficult situation and are trying to function in a very overheated atmosphere at KPFA. I don't know either of them personally. But I did hear Andrew Phillips, the interim GM, on Chris Welch's show a few weeks back and was impressed with his sincerity and honesty.

At the last KPFA Local Station Board (LSB) meeting held in Rohnert Park a couple of weeks ago, LSB members wanted to know who administers the KPFA Worker website. The site was put up anonymously. It does not represent all those who work at KPFA -- paid or unpaid. It is not an official website of KPFA or the union. Brian Edwards-Tiekert and a few of his allies have made reference to it on air, encouraging listeners to go there as if it were an official site of all KPFA workers. It is a desperate and sneaky attempt to mislead the public. Their dishonest tactic seems to be working, but don't be fooled.

Re: Do you miss the KPFA Morning Show?

To the Question: " Do you miss the KPFA Morning Show?"
    My Answer is:

No ! I miss the Old kpfa !

Personally, No, I do not miss the old Morning Show, one little bit.
I miss the Old kpfa !

= As one who started listening to kpfa back in the Summer of '56, on the days when I was back with mom at our flat on Woolsey Street, & home from the Farm, in Sonoma Valley, where my mom had farmed me out so'as she could have a fling! & check out her new man...

What I miss, is the Old kpfa, the Station of my Childhood. It was pretty much a Classical Music Radio Station then - although it was also way into Folk Music, of Course, with the old "Saturday Night Special' every Saturday night, & it was, of course the first radio station in America to play the beatles and other mercy-beat bands, way back in '62, when they were really not getting much airtime in the States.

What I miss about the old kpfa, the gone station of my childhood, is that the current "KPFA," being actually, something of a pseudomorph, with all its hypocritical politically correct attitudes { yes, that's PC, to you, kids } has strait-jacketed free speech, { yes, that's *F*R*E*E * * S*P*E*E*C*H* kids } almost as much as right wing talk radio does. The old kpfa was a forum for All points of view : Beats from the Block on Grant avenue, Commies, H.U.A.C. refuseniks & Fifth Amendment invokers, Socialists, Adlai Stevenson afficionados & all shades of liberal Democrats, Anarchists, & "Christian Anarchists," from the hills of Fairfax & Los Gatos - they all got to have their say - you name it: the old kpfa was an Equal Opportunity Platform to Spiel ! Why, they even had a "Bircher Hour," back in the Fifties and early Sixties...

Try, for instance, Now, to get a word in edgewise on the current,
pseudomorphed, version of KPFA, and to suggest, for instance, that the National Debt, is not something that we "Owe to Ourselves" as that witty and genteel Hudson Squire, Wall Street Broker, and Father Christmas, Franklin D. Roosevelt, informed the body politic in America early on in His Reign. = And which has ever since been the self-deluding mantra of liberal Democrats whenever nagging doubts intrude into their minds on the Subject and they wonder: "What if...?"

When in Doubt, Democrats, just Repeat the Mantra : "We owe it to Ourselves... We owe it to Ourselves... We owe it to Ourselves...
    We owe it to Ourselves..."

Indeed we do not owe it to ourselves. Unless of course you happen to be in that small Set of jolly blue-bloods who are co-incidentally, like Franklin D. Roosevelt, members of both Sets; i.e., the Public Sector, the "We" who owe and also to the much smaller Set of the owning class, the bond- holders, i.e., the "Ourselves," to whom the current Fourteen Thousand Billion Dollars is now "owed."

Then indeed, one could say, truly:"We Owe it to Ourselves." Otherwise, it is a Lie. It was a brilliant "in joke"at the time, and I'm sure that Franklin and the old boys must have had a good laugh about it back at the Men's Club. But today, try explaining
on KPFA why this joke was funny to the old boys sitting in their Lounge Chairs at the Men's Club; or try talking about the Subject, even - you won't get very far.

Of course, If we could just get the National Debt Nationalized, why then we would owe it to Ourselves. Wouldn't that be nice?... Am I digressing? ...But this is Why! Yes this is what I have missed, since kpfa morphed into KPFA... the Forum is no longer Free...

Try also, some time, perchance, to get a word in edge-wise, these days, on "KPFA," without getting strait away cut off, in the midst of speaking, Someday, when the phone lines are open, and they are taking call-ins, talking about some aspect of the Budget =OR= Economics... Just bring up the Subject of the Federal Reserve Bank. Just try. I dare you.

That Subject also = Quite related, of course, to the Subject i just mentioned, is also Verbotten...

On the old kpfa, they would have listened, and allowed you to Speak - it was, after All, the era in which Berserk-town was known for that kinda thing, ya know? - and it might even have led to a Forum or a Debate on the Subject. But no More. That was the kpfa of the 'Fifties and the 'Sixties. On the New, shiny, Pacifica-Foundation'ed, & Pseudomorph'ed KPFA, you will find the identical "flashing red light" policy on those Subjects as you get when you call into ditto-head-land and try to broach the same subjects with Rush. I know whereof I speak on this point; &, as the hacks all say: "Trust me on this one."

Re: Do you miss the KPFA Morning Show?

After all the lies on the air and online by the "Save KPFA"/"KPFA Worker" faction, and their complaints filed with the National Labor Relations Board, Pacifica has been cleared of all charges. It is unfortunate and a real shame that KPFA listener/subscribers were subjected to misinformation from Brian Edwards-Tiekert, Eileen Alfandary and others who think that they run KPFA. - Attila

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    July 15, 2011

    For information contact:
    Arlene Engelhardt
    510-849-2590, ext. 208

PACIFICA FOUNDATION VINDICATED ON LABOR ISSUES AT KPFA

This statement is to inform our listeners, subscribers and any other interested members of the public of the final resolution of all legal claims brought by Communication Workers of America Local 9415 against Pacifica Foundation. We are pleased to announce that all the claims have either been withdrawn or decided in the foundation‚s favor.

A decision has been reached in the arbitration proceedings regarding the employment of Aimee Allison, who was laid off as a result of a reduction in force at KPFA for budgetary reasons. In a victory for the foundation, and after months of acrimony from some on-air union staff members, a neutral arbitrator denied the union‚s grievance and determined that the foundation laid off Ms. Allison, who had less seniority than other program hosts, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. The arbitrator found that the foundation actively explored alternatives to the layoff proposed by the union, but that most of the alternatives "would do nothing to attack the root cause of KPFA's problems, which is expenses greater than costs, and especially the need to cut personnel costs." The arbitrator agreed with the foundation‚s position that the „only apparently effective way to do this was to lay off personnel.‰ We wish Ms. Allison well in her future endeavours.

Additionally, each of the three complaints filed by the Communication Workers of America Local 9415 with the National Labor Relations Board have been closed. The union withdrew two of the charges after the NLRB concluded its investigation into each. An advice memo issued by the NLRB's General Counsel on April 18, 2011 reveals that the NLRB advised the union that its charges related to the layoffs conducted by the foundation were without merit and would be dismissed if not withdrawn by the union. The advice memo can be found here. The union‚s third charge, protesting what the union has incorrectly called the foundation‚s "gag rule," was dismissed by the NLRB. The NLRB found that the foundation's rules concerning on-air statements "were narrowly confined to protect the foundation‚s core purpose."

Pacifica Executive Director Arlene Engelhardt states "I am pleased that Pacifica was vindicated on all counts and that these matters have now been resolved".

Re: Do you miss the KPFA Morning Show?

The ruling on Aimee Allison doesn't negate the whole movement against Arlene Englehardt and the people in Pacifica who have come to Berkeley from the East Coast and are dismembering KPFA. Aimee lacked the senority that the other people who where fired and then reinstated by the court. I am very concerned about the future of KPFA, it will not be a viable station if the minority who are currently running the station continue to drive away listeners. You can't argue with the statistics which show that fewer people are listening and that it has dropped radically in the AM time between 7 and 9.

    Barrie,

The "movement" against Arlene Englehard has been fabricated by the "SaveKPFA"/"KPFA Worker" faction who don't have the decency to reveal who administers the "KPFA Worker" website, though it's pretty clear who they are.

Please read what Daniel Borgstrom has written about Tiekert's reinstatement. Daniel has been monitoring events at KPFA for many years. https://danielborgstrom.blogspot.com...red-spins.html

As for the drop in Morning Show listenership, it was Tiekert and his cohorts who encouraged listeners to boycott the new morning programs and to instead send money to "KPFA Worker" which only represents the interest of a select minority at KPFA. If anyone is trying to dismember KPFA it is the Tiekert and his cohorts. Please dig a bit deeper than the misinformation presented at "KPFA Worker," a website that does not in any way represent all the staff and workers at KPFA.

Arlene Englehard is doing her best to clean up the mess at KPFA that was caused by years of mismanagement and loss of much needed funds -- the reason for the layoffs. Contrary to Tiekert's assertion, Interim Station Manager, Andrew Phillips and Interim Program Director, Carrie Core are also doing a good job preserving KPFA as a viable community asset.
