Things you can do to avoid Smart Meter installation now

Dear Valley Friends,

Here's things you can do to avoid SmartMeter installation on your home,
since the PG&E delay list doesn't offer adequate protection.

****Call Wellington* (the Smart Meter installers)@*866-671-1001* and let
them now that you do not accept the installation of a SmartMeter. Be sure to
ask for a confirmation number that Wellington will send back the work order
for installation on your house to the PG&E.which indicates you declined to
accept the installation of the SmartMeter. Also ask them to call you if they
receive a new order for your home.

* **If you can *go solar*, you're off the hook, because a smart meter only
works for people who don't have solar power, which requires a meter that can
measure backwards, to credit you for any excess power your generating. *Let
PG&E know if you're intending to install a solar system ASAP (*PG&E is
looking to have all smart meters installed by February, also people on the
delay list). See if your neighbors are interested in installing solar panels
too, in any case they can call PG&E's delay list and Wellington (numbers
above).

**Talk with your neighbors *about Smart meters, if you only prevent
installation on your home, you still get zapped by the nearby Smart Meters. Let
them know about the high bills, the privacy risks and the serious health
implications. We don't even what what going to happen when all these meters
are in place and the smart grid starts streaming through our houses,
everything will likely be amplified and even more people will have
difficulty functioning. Kids and pets are even more at risk then we are,
just like lab rats show brain tumors faster than we do. Together with your
neighbors you can also plan to watch out for installers.
For anyone who's not yet on the PG&E 'delay list': the number is
707-577-7097, also mention that what you really want is to opt-out. Don't
forget to make sure Wellington got the message by calling 866-671-1001.

Marin County Board of Supervisors is preparing a one year SmartMeter
moratorium *that will hopefully be sufficient until the Huffman bill makes
its way through the legislature and takes effect. Come in great numbers, to
show your support.

*Be sure to come January 4th to the Board of Supervisors Meeting! Time yet
to be announced.

***Jared Huffman Introduced Bill to Require SmartMeter Opt-Out.
Currently the bill does NOT have a provision to take off Smart Meters that
were installed. It could take till 2012 to get this through the Assembly and
Senate. So, it is not helpful for us as it is.

Thank him for sponsoring AB 37 and ask him to make sure that a provision is
added to let people get the old style meters back at the expense of PG&E, a
retro active opt-out.

**Please email Steve Kinsey at [email protected]* (our only elected
official here in West Marin). Also let him know about any installations in
the Valley.

**Please email our governor-elect Jerry Brown* at [email protected]* Ask
for a state wide ban on smart meters, just as Maryland has.* Let him know
what's happening here in Marin with smart meters being installed against the
will of so many people and that our supervisors are still putting off taking
real action. Or just forward your letters to Jerry Brown so he knows what's
up when he takes office.

Christy Sloan sells a metal 'meter girdle' to put around your meter with a
lock to hopefully prevent smart meter installation for $45, just be sure you
find out first if it fits on your meter. You can also contact her if you

Stopped a Wellington truck today and was able to have a long conversation with the driver. I don't know what his title is, he said he was inspecting the installations that were done yesterday and today. He said his name is "Alan".

Alan answered a lot of questions that have been posed here and at meetings. He described the PG&E position about the "complete" safety of the devices and seemed pretty guileless in his enthusiasm to get his job done and see that the other employees were able to complete their jobs as well. He declined to speak publicly (on KWMR). Otherwise he was very forthcoming.

me: Why is there such a hurry to get Inverness installation done?
Alan: Wellington comes during what's called a "blackout period" when the meter readers are not in a particular area. It occurs for about two weeks each month.

me: Are you trying to get the meters installed before the Moratorium Vote at the Board of Supervisors in the County?
Alan: The county has no jurisdiction over our work. Even if they vote for a moratorium, we will continue to install them. The only agency that has any control over the installation and our work is the CPUC. No law or ordinance passed by any county, city or state will stop our installations.

me: If a homeowner has a sign out or asks you not to install, will you install it anyway?
Alan: No. We look for the signs and sometimes it's as small as a short handwritten note taped to the meter. It it's there, we move on to the next house. If a person asks us not to install, I wish them a good day and move on.

me: Yesterday an installer walked past a sign that had blown down and installed one meter on a property with two homes. The homeowner asked them to stop after one installation was complete. How can they get that 'smart'meter removed?
Alan: If the sign was not visible, the installer was not at fault. The homeowner will have to call PG&E to have it replaced.

me: Where are the other installations happening today.
Alan: All over.

me: Where are the repeaters installed in Inverness?
Alan: They will take another 3 months to be installed. First the meters will continue to be read by the readers and compared with older bills to make sure they are still consistent. After that is complete, the repeater installations will happen at intervals along Sir Francis Drake.

me: Further comments?
Alan: I don't know why people are treating Wellington as it it's a bad company or treating us as if we are bad people. We believe the meters are an improvement for our environment and are safe. The smartmeter program has given the country 600 jobs. Why would they want to deny us our jobs.

me: Are you concerned that, if the smartmeters are determined to be causing harm and there are future lawsuits, you may be liable?
Alan: Because we are subcontractors of PG&E, I believe we aren't liable. PG&E is.

Hi,

I just phoned both the Wellington and PG&E numbers from Barry's posting above. Here is an update:

The Wellington man said that in my area (Western Sebastopol), Wellington has sent back all its work orders to PG&E due to opposition and will not be servicing this area now or in future.

However PG&E still plans deployment by the end of March/April, even if you call to decline it. They still insist that there is no opt-out option, but will note that you wish to be delayed, which will put you at the end of their deployment period. They will notify customers by mail before deployment.

The number to call for delay is different from the one above: 1 866 743 0263. This gets you to a cheerful (in my case) agent who sends an email on your behalf to the appropriate department stating your name, address, and reason for deferring (I asked her to add that I would prefer an opt-out option) after which she reads you a terms&conditions thingie stating that PGE will in fact be installing the meters and there is essentially nothing you can do about it.
