So what do you think about the system?

Hi Everybody,

This system has been up for two weeks now and I would like to get some feedback on what you think of it? From the feedback I’ve gotten so far, I know the user interface needs some work, such as:

- Posting clear posting guidelines for the site:
-Post to only 1 category
-What’s paid (WaccoPages Business directory and Services Offered) and what’s free (everything else, including all events!)
-What to do if an item is sold, etc. (update your message or reply to it)

- Creating a page on the website where you can see/control all your email settings for all categories (no email, individual emails, daily digest, weekly digest) and whether you want them to include public replies

- Be able to directly reply to individual emails without going to the website

- Make the “New Posts” option bring up all the threads that had new posts in the last week or two, and be able to just click “Next” to go to the next thread

- Condense the digest a bit (you know you can click on a message subject and go right to the message, right?)

- Change the “Create New Topic” button to “Post”

So before I dump a bunch more bucks and time into the system, I wanted to get a sense of how you feel about the general idea. It will still be based on the idea of going to the website, picking a category and posting there. You will have the ability to set your email preferences by category and/or use the website.

My hope was that as a community we would have decided to move as a whole to this system when it was ready. I don’t see that as a possibility anymore. So if I/we went ahead, it would create separate, and to some extent, an overlapping community. That doesn’t feel good to me, yet, it still seems to me like this site may provide a better vehicle as the WaCCO community continues to grow.

I know that for some of you, the idea of accessing and controlling the system by categories is appealing and for others it creates confusion. So there may be a place for two systems.

Just WaccoPages Business Directory?

Another option is to use Wacco-bb Yahoogroup for all bulletin board postings and just use this site for the WaCCO Pages Business Directory. I hope there could be a link on the Wacco-bb site and emails to this site. It would be an easy way for the members of Wacco-bb and perhaps the larger west county progressive community to find and choose a particular service provider and a way for the many creative and dedicated service providers on Wacco-bb, as well as those referred by members and other business that serve the progressive community of western Sonoma County, to promote their offerings. The listings could include images and fonts or could link directly to the provider’s website. I’m thinking something like $5.95/month or $50/year.

I am most interested to hear what you think of this idea, from both people who think they would use such a service and those who would be interested in advertising their services.

Please let me know your HONEST thoughts on this, either publicly or privately. While I totally appreciate your support, I want to know you what you think is best for you and the community in the long run.

Based upon the single fact that the new system offers RSS feeds, I am fully in support of moving EVERYTHING to WaccoBB.net. RSS is so much more efficient than email for uses such as this. Newsreader capabilities are already built into the newest versions of Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari. RSS will also be tightly integrated into the next version of Micro$oft Internet Explorer due out later this fall.

I would also be very supportive of adding customizable RSS searches much like Craigslist uses. This simple application of RSS saves me hours each week trying to keep track of things that I am looking for without having to repeat the search every single day.

Thanks for all the time and efforts in setting up this valuable service to our community!

My main concern here is that things don't get too "restrictive" feeling. I think you should be able to post to whatever categories make sense for what you're posting, so that you're message will assuredly make it all those who might be interested in you're message... and thus making sure that people are easily connected and the site doing what it's here for... making it easy and valuable for our community to be better connected.

For the paid areas I think you should keep the costs down quite low like $1.95 or $2.95 a month, otherwise you will probably hardly get any of the people who would really like to do this. I think charging more would definitely discourage many folks from deciding to use this valuable service and therefore weakening the whole purpose of what I believe this site is all about. I understand you, Barry, would like to make a little extra $$ for all your efforts, but I think if you start out with lower costs you will get a lot more people interested and could always change things down the road if it's not adding up to how you'd like it too.

For the items sold or given away I think the person who originally posted should just go back to their posting and change the original subject title to something like: "_____ now sold or given away or gone" , and even delete the main body of the original text so no furthur responses would be attracted.

For viewing the "New Posts" option I think you should be able to just type in or select the number of days yourself. For example if you went out of town for 4 days you could just list the new postings for the past 4 days.

I think for the amount of exposure people will get, $50 a year is a give-away. Where else can you get that kind of advertising for that price? Goodness...for $5.95 a month maybe you could buy paper and ink, print your own flyers and post them on the local boards, but then there is the amount of time and fuel you have to factor in.

I have been receiving the digest for about a week and so far I like it. The only thing I have found aggravating were a couple events postings that the person posted them 3-4 times and each of them was the same thing and quite long. I also didn't like the postings with huge gaps in the format.

I would like to see the top of the digest have a smaller navigating list instead of the big bulky headers right now but I can live with it if that doesn't change.

I think it would be kinda cool if we could create personal 'avatars' and tags for our posts (nothing obscene) - I also think an instruction on how to insert html tags would be useful since I have tried to follow a couple that were just done wrong and didn't work.

Perhaps you could create a pre-formatted events form that prompts the poster to clearly post the day/time/cost of the event as well as where it will be held and one that LIMITS the length of body copy to something reasonable.

I get frustrated when the price of the event is HIDDEN or not posted at all - requesting you follow a link or call someone.

I will learn how to navigate the new system with alittle patience. All in all it is easier and friendlier than being boombarded with 150 emails that are of no interest to me.

is not helping me at all. I usually get lots of response
to my ads for sewing, and I haven't been getting very
many at all.
If I were someone else, even someone who knew my
name and was looking for me, WHERE would I look?

Also, my small side lines of drum and rattle making,
and raising rabbits, are much too small to afford to
be a PAID venture in any way. I have sold drums at
ONE event this year....hardly a business. I post them,
and ask if people want to learn...2 - 3 students a year
for $25. each.

So in lots of ways, the general "all in together" was
better for me, I think, because lots more people saw
the category of sewing and alterations.....instead of
having to think "I need my clothes fixed. I'll go look
in SERVICES for someone to do it." That's the way
a bulletin board works. It's not like using a telephone
book, and that is what this system FEELS LIKE. Reading
a phonebook.

Somehow, the spark of feeling like we were all in this
together is gone.

Thanks again for this beautiful website. Right now I am getting the information in the digest form and might switch to the email version in the future. If I'm understanding everything correctly that's possible, right?

As far as charging for business advertising:

There is something wonderful about the old yahoo group, the instant communication, very minor restrictions and particularly because it wasn't about money. It was a simple community bulletin board, and it had a distinct personality. I'm sure most of us use Craigs list too which has more features, but it just isn't as personal.

Having said that I would definitely go to a website that lists local businesses, particularly with testamonials, when I am looking for someone or something in particular. I use the yellow pages a lot and it's like shooting in the dark. A business, a provider, etc who is recommended by your local community is very, very valuable.

Since you have just started this board and there are a couple of free options out there already, I think the advertising should be very inexpensive at the beginning. Perhaps you can develop different levels, a simple text ad could be very inexpensive all the way on up to a more expensive ad that includes graphics etc I think this also depends on when you want to start charging. If you are thinking very soon I would make it very inexpensive and raise the price later if it's successful. If you are going to do it after the board is open for several months and you have a big group of subscribers, the $10.00 a month or $50.00 a year is very reasonable.

It's disconcerting that Jane has had less calls for sewing than usual. I see what she means about the feel of a bulletin board. While anybody who comes to the site and clicks New Posts, or who gets a daily digest of everything and scans it all, will see her advertisements for sewing and alterations, those who don't may indeed not, unless they're actively looking for them.

For myself, I haven't seen a big difference. I wasn't getting much work and I'm not getting much work still. But this has to be only one of many places that I use to network and make my writing and editorial services known. Work is scarce everywhere, times are tough, most folks are doing their editorial work in-house, and maybe that's the case with sewing, too. I know there are things I would love to have sewn, but I can't afford to do it until someone else can afford to hire me.

If I judge this BB by other yardsticks, aside from the Am I Getting Work Out of It scale, then I find it measures up really well. Far better than the old yahoo group for finding what I want when I want it, and also for checking new posts quickly and efficiently when I want to. It's versatile and powerful. I've been on several different types of online BB and no others allowed such flexibility in the subscription options.

I like the new system! I like that I can unsubscribe to categories that don't interest me, and only get what does interest me in the emails. It takes me only a fraction of the time it used to to go through the email. Of course, I only get one email a day now instead of 5 or 6.

I like that I have only to click on "reply" to go to the site to see if the item's still available, or to reply. It doesn't matter to me that I have to do this at the site rather than in the email.

I do wish that the screen was set up for smaller screen-computers rather than the big monsters, to accommodate us folks with 15" rather than 21" or even 17" - it is a PITB to have to scroll from side to side with every line of text!

Just to do my part in moving things along, I have unsubscribed from the Yahoo site; but I do miss the larger number of emails!

I would cheerfully pay $1/month for this bb but could not justify $10/month.

I think that if people just tried it for a while, they'd get the feel of it and end up liking it better than Yahoo. It was the same for me on my computer when I had to switch to Mac OS X - it was different, it was strange, some things that I loved were missing - but I adapted and I now like it better.

Change is okay. Getting used to change, learning to deal with it, is better!

I like the new system much better. It just makes more sense. I get the digest, and it's so much easier to see at a glance what I'm interested in.

I also like the ability to post photos, although I haven't done that yet. I'm still trying to find some time to get thru the learning curve on those aspects of interest to me.

I do wish we could post to more than one category, as Craig's List allows. At least 2 would help. One for general workshops, and one for more specific focus. But I guess we could cover that by being in the directory.

As for paid ads, the price seems fair to me.

I do appreciate your work, and look forward to paying you "in kind" with my photography session for you and your girls.

I have mixed feelings.

Now that I am receiving emails as they come in directly to my box it feels more like the old wacco. But everyone is not doing that, so I am concerned that emails I post will not be seen by nearly as many people.
For example, an email asking for help - in the past, I always got at least half dozen replies in a few hours - my last post asking for help on leveling a road, I have got none.
It would be better to be able to post such postings in the general category as well - perhaps all postings can be in general, and then again in their specific category.

I dont like having to go through the trouble it takes to reply. I understand you are trying to fix that.

I think $10 month for services is easy for some and hard for others, such as yard work folks and others who are having a harder time. So I think it is a bit steep. I would like it to not exclude the lower end of service providers.

Are we beginning consolidated referrals again. I havent seen your reminders out there for people to do that?

Has every wacco person received a private email alerting them to the new system and inviting them to join, if not, do you need some help with that, perhaps you could recruit many of us to make an email tree and make that happen.

I do have trouble when there are computer related rules for doing things. My mind tends to go black. IU've got this much down, but thats all.

Thanks for all you are doing. I am still flabbergasted you never called Yahoo and simply asked the question. My son thinks the consolidated referrals would still be there somewhere, for example.

I almost always got responses when I posted about my Healing Clinic in the past and I haven't gotten any under the new system.

I hope there are still plans to notify those subscribers about what happened and give them the two options (WACCO-BB yahoogroup and this). There are many things I like about the new system, but it doesn't have the feel I liked about the old system. What I liked about the old system, was that when I got the digest, I could easily scan through the messages for things that looked interesting and find things that looked interesting which it never would have occurred to me to look for. I don't know how the new system could address that. I currently get the digest and never adjusted my settings so I think I am getting all of the messages, but it isn't as easy to scan because of its larger size, text, spacing, and graphics. I do like the quick click feature to go to a message.

I'm also quite unsure how often to repost my messages for my regular groups and how. I used to post reminders every couple weeks or montly depending on the event, but if I go to the bulletin board and my message is still near the top, it seems sily to repost it. Yet, if somebody is only reading messages on e-mail then they wouldn't get the reminder and sometimes getting the reminder spurs them to go. For one of my messages (my book discussion group), I edited it to change the date, but the edited message didn't show up in the digest. Many of my messages don't fit into clear categories so I posted them in two or three categories which is annoying to see in the digest.

Overall, while I think the new system is cleaner and more logical in many ways, the old sytem fit with the way I wanted to read my messages from WACCO so I prefer the old system. I like to see things without being able to think about what I want. I like to be able to post without thinking about where to categorize it.

And as somebody who teaches classes and hosts the healing clinic more as a "hobby" than as a "job," about $1 or $2/month is about all I can afford to pay to advertise. I do what I do because I love it, want to help people, and want to give them affordable options.

Okay, here is a test run to see how well I like this new system.

Honestly, it has taken me awhile to figure out all the new stuff - actually, I don't think I have it figured out yet.

I did prefer the simplicity of the old wacco group and being able to reply directly without having to go through the website.

I do like the fact that graphics and fonts can be used. :)

As far as paying for posting announcements of upcoming events and specials, I think that $10 per month is way too much. I could see maybe $2 per month, since, like Jasmine and a few others, we never really got that much response to our events. Maybe it's because there were so many postings each day and the delete button got used alot. Not sure how many people would see our postings for Healing Oasis if they hadn't opted for that section to subscribe to.

So I am all for a new solution - just not sure what that is or how it will work.

I personally think having the messages stay around for more than one day A MILLION TIMES BETTER than the old system. Something will occur to me, and I'll remember I saw something about it on here, and what do you know...I can go back and find out about it a week later! What a miracle. I wasn't about to keep all those digests in my inbox forever. And I for one am never sure what I might want to do Friday on Monday so if I know it's here, i'll return to find out about it later.

I think this one feature makes the learning curve worth it. And there is indeed a learning curve.

-I want a simple reply/post button
-I find navigating around to find things and then getting back to where I started is still quite challenging

-Does everything get posted to one place ( new posts) then also to the individual categories they want to put them in?

Please don't take this as antagonistic but where in the world could you get advertising for a business for 2$ a month? That is crazy

This system while still new and buggy is such a resource and has the potential to pull in people to a business that would never see it especially all the home based things that we do

You can't even buy the paper or xerox for that amount of money
and your own time is worth a lot more...what about the gas money it takes to drive around and post posters
If you charge 60 or 50 or even 40 an hour for a massage( for example) it is paid for with one or two new referrals..It is really how you make it work or how you look at it

I don't do much advertising for my regular gig because I have had this resource. And when I have done other things and had to advertise it has cost hundreds of dollars so for me the 50 a year is bargain basement

It would be a shame for people to not post their cool businesses because they think they can't afford it but somewhere the valuation of a person's time must be factored in as well

Maybe a barter system could be created for people who really can't afford it.. I bet Barry is willing to work with people on how to manageably pay it off. BTW how do Craig List moderators do it


somehow I think the concept of advertising on a list serve like this needs to be supported.. more maybe people that don't do the advertising would be willing to contribute here and there just for the heck of it to keep the whole system working

Says "script error", Very unweildy (sp?), and I am still having a hard time figuring out how to post, how to reply to a post and frankly, for me, there are too many things on the page. Like all those little moving pac men things on the side. this is much harder than the old site. And do I have to have your whole original post repeated when I reply, Barry?

In the old system, we could search for specific items in the archives up at yahoogroups page. So this is not such a great benefit, IMO. My preference is for the old free system where there are fewer rules. I'm focusing my efforts there.

Thanks for your direction but I looked at the posts you referenced and they are greek to me. I am getting very frustrated as I don't want to spend so much time learning how to do this.
And, by the way, I don't believe I ever hit the "Quote" button when I was replying. I must have come at it from a different direction because that was not an option. When I tried to post a reply the previous post was already in the box and I couldn't figure out a place to write my message except for above the previous post that I was replying to.
I really like it when I could just hit one button to post a new message and reply directly to the party if I was interested in something. I don't want to spend so much time scrolling and leaping between categories. And as I said, I get a script error message every single time I switch categories, post or do anything.

In general, I think it's good. I subscribe to most of the categories, even though I am not interested in all of them, just so I can get that old WACCO feeling of looking through many disparate postings. That seems to work fine. Change IS hard, but in this case there truly is no going back... so I think the more community buy-in we have, the quicker we'll get back to that community bulletin board feeling we loved before.

The fee question is tricky - I really hear both sides. I would be willing to pay $10 a month or even quite a bit more if I felt I was getting a return on the investment. If not, I wouldn't. Right now there is no way to assess what kind of a return there would be, but with less than a third of the subscribers as we had before, it seems likely that the return would be minimal at this point. Perhaps, as others have suggested, starting lower and increasing as this site takes off...

Finally, for some reason the link to reply/go to website on my digest version isn't working and I have been unable to post a reply to anyone. Is there a way to get around this? I've noticed that lots of the HTML emails I get have a couple of different ways of linking to the websites because invariably one of them doesn't work with my system. Maybe we need something like that...
