common wisdom is that the differences between the progressive/leftist/whatever wing of the Democrats and the moderates/centrists/whatevers has made it difficult to accomplish much in the way of dramatic change.
I suspect the GOP is going to feel pretty trapped by the unholy alliance they've made with the teaparty factions.
I can't guess who's going to win and in what numbers. If this election cycle ends up with a mix of two types of Democrats and two types of Republicans we may end up looking like a more typical parliamentary system. We may end up with some Palinesque figure filling a role similar to the one Avigdor Liberman does in Israel.
