Keep Santa Rosa Progressive this November

For only the second time in Santa Rosa history, there is a progressive city government. But local conservatives have fundraised more than $100,000 to boot out 3 of the liberals whose seats are up for election, including Mayor Susan Gorin.

There are only 7 city council members. The other 4 seats are not up for election this Fall. There are 4 progressives and 3 conservatives as it stands now.

Please hold the line. If we lose just one seat then the conservatives will roll back all of the progress made so far. Historically, only conservatives have governed Santa Rosa. The first progressive majority was in power just two years ago.

Finally, the people of Santa Rosa do NOT elect the mayor. Only a simple majority of the 7 city council members elects the Mayor of Santa Rosa.

Not only is it very new, but as one of many who spoke on behalf of the No Spray Action Network (opposing forced pesticide spraying for the Grassy Winged Sharpshooter as proposed by the County Agricultural Commissioner back in 2000) and the Living Wage Coalition (asking the SR City Council to just investigate and discuss the possibility of a modest Living Wage ordinance for City workers and contractors) and getting the cold shoulder both times, I can attest to how refreshing the shift has been.

I no longer live in Santa Rosa, but I read the news, and in spite of this being a time of fiscal cutbacks and budget crisis, it seems that the "Progressive Majority" is doing a much more effective, and much less contentious, job than previous councils. Where at least four out of seven votes always voted for building development and against anything opposed by the Chamber of Commerce and the North Bay Builders Association.

It's a huge relief, and a return to the bad old days would be a real drag, as well as disservice to the people of Santa Rosa. Don't doubt that the interests that were used to being in the drivers seat, are doing their all to reverse things back to the days in which they had a comfortable lock on power in the largest city in Sonoma County.
