I mean that in the nicest way, of course.
The U.S.has been on an imperialist treadmill for what....two centuries? Lots of trudging and action, but no moving forward. After 200 years of this crap, our country is in major need of a foreign policy paradigm change. The U.S. just has to start developing a proactive foreign policy, and dump the way outdated reactive policies of invading countries who piss off the ever-changing U.S. powers-that-be.
I'm one who feels we have a political system that could benefit many countries of the world. I believe that in hundreds or a thousand years from now, the representative republic system of government will be the norm world-wide. I believe we are right to engage in "nation building" in other countries, to promote our superior political system.
But we've been going at it all wrong. Our disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are just the most recent gruesome examples of the errors of U.S. Imperialism.
But through the errors of our past/current imperialism, we have developed the hammers of a mighty military, and a department of state that have both gained a lot of experience influencing recalcitrant states. Perhaps, if we make minor changes in how we use these hammers, we can end the misery we've inflicted on the world in the past, and start realizing ways that our country's interventionist tendencies can become a force for good.
To me, Haiti provides an excellent opportunity to start implementing a foreign policy paradigm change. Haiti is a country that would benefit from U.S. military Humvees patrolling the roads, Corps Of Engineers rebuilding the infrastructure, and our Department Of State setting up a system of safe local/national elections.
If we're going to infest a country for the decades it takes to instill stability and functionality, let's do it in our own neighborhood, in a country which cries out for our interventionist involvement. Start pulling U.S. forces out of Iraq, Afghanistan, Europe, and Korea. If we have to use them somewhere, let's send them to Haiti, where there's a dire need for foreign intervention.
