Ayatollah Santorum to Lead Christian Shariah State in America

Rick Santorum on Sunday took on separation of church and state.

"I don't believe in an America where the separation of church and state are absolute," he told 'This Week' host George Stephanopoulos. "The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country...to say that people of faith have no role in the public square? You bet that makes me want to throw up."

The GOP candidate was responding to comments he made last October. He had said that he "almost threw up" after reading JFK's 1960 speech in which he declared his commitment to the separation of church and state.
Santorum also on Sunday told Meet The Press host David Gregory that separation of church and state was "not the founders' vision."

The GOP candidate has been doubling down on religious rhetoric in an effort to court evangelical voters ahead of Super Tuesday. Last week, he questioned Obama's spiritual beliefs.
"[Obama believes in] some phony ideal, some phony theology ... not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology," he said.

    As Andy Borowitz observed recently,

"In an effort to underscore his core beliefs leading up to this Tuesday night’s primary contests, former Sen. Rick Santorum made a campaign swing through the Seventeenth Century today.

"At the first stop of his ambitious journey, Mr. Santorum restated his reason for seeking the White House: 'I am running for President today because the position of Spanish Inquisitor is no longer available.'”

Mr. Santorum would lead the nation into a theocracy that would put the mullahs of Iran to shame. Americans have deplored the stoning of Middle Eastern women for the "crime" of getting raped. We already know that Santorum has stated that women who become pregnant as a result of rape should be required to bear the fetus to full term. He would impose his religious beliefs on female rape victims. At the same time, he advocates cutting all programs that support unwed mothers. Forcing a woman to have a child of rape and then denying her social and economic support seems equivalent to stoning to me.

We've observed the power of religious fanatics in several state legislatures to push through Christian Shariah laws. When they don't get their way, they obstruct the regular business of the states. I believe Santorum represents a very dangerous potential in America. The Right is trying to disenfranchise voters and to discourage voters to the point where the turnout for the November elections could be low enough to favor the better organized bloc of Christian Fundamentalists. Nobody believed Hitler could be elected, and he received only 37% of the vote in 1932, yet 2 years later when Hindenberg died, he became president and immediately abolished the office of president and established the office of Fuhrer and took the position.

The road to a victory for Santorum would go through the Electoral College where an outcome like Germany in the 30s could happen. I do not dismiss the danger posed by Mr. Santorum. We need a massive turnout of liberal and progressive voters nationwide in November. We do not need a return to the Seventeenth Century. American seems divided into two camps. There are 25% who support the Tea Party and who identify with Fundamentalist causes. Santorum is their current favorite. Then there is the 75% who are fragmented but generally aligned with liberal beliefs. Sadly, Obama has done almost nothing to shift the American political dialogue. He has the bully pulpit. He ought to be reminding the electorate of the principles upon which the nation was founded.
