    Sonoma Wine Shop opens in Sebastopol featuring wine club & mostly-self service meals

    Hello Waccobbeans - from Bryan Cooper, owner, Sonoma Wine Shop [and long-time Wacco - Barry]

    Having lived in Sebastopol for over 20 years, I finally have opened a small business here south of town.
    (Some of you may know me as a volunteer for Palm Drive Hospital.)

    For the past 10 years, I have owned Sonoma Wine Shop - host to small 1,300 member wine club on Sonoma Plaza.

    We hand pick small production wines for our many members, with 350 local Sonoma members picking their wine up, the rest shipped across the country. , Club members receive 15% discounts on food and wine. (To join, and receive your discount, locals need purchase only 2 bottles of great wine a quarter)

    Last year, I hired Meekk Shelef, former owner of Bistro V, as our general manager. Rick Vargas, also of Bistro V, is our French-trained chef. To make sure our wine club members got a real taste of Sonoma - we opened a small kitchen - "La Bodega" - a cheese and pasta shop. There, we serve our members our own house-made pasta - ravioli, cannelloni, lasagna. Our food is becoming famous (at least in Sonoma) - we recently won SF Chronicle's Best Gourmet Shop in Sonoma in 2009.

    We use local cheeses in all our pasta dishes - Vella, Matos, Cowgirl, Bohemian, Bodega, Redwood Hill, Cypress Grove and Fiscalini are part of our 70+ California cheese selection - we buy almost all directly from the dairies. We also source our produce from local purveyors such as Green String Farm and Laguna Farm. We have a substantial ovo/lacto vegetarian menu, great goat cheese (lower lactose issues) and are adding vegan and gluten free options.

    We grew over 30% last year and filled out our space on the Plaza. To help us run the wine club, we have now taken over the former Chez Peyo/Bistro V/Restaurant Eloise space on 2295 Gravenstein Hwy South (hwy 116), Sebastopol. We are now looking for Sebastopol club members to join our growing wine/foodie/social set.

    Meekk has got us through the remodeling and licensing and staffing hurdles, and Rick has completed turning the Sebastopol space into our main kitchen, preparing foods for both locations. Manuel Padilla is our main cook - he worked for Pierre at Chez Peyo for 12 years and also for Meekk at Bistro V and does a great job for us too.

    In Sebastopol, with its larger kitchen, we have expanded our club menu - family styled service includes lamb stews, duck with lentils, steaks and other shared plates. Meals are available to eat in or to go and finish at home. Our kitchen is open all day Thur-Mon with late dinners available Friday and Saturday nights. Wine is available by the bottle or glass and the best price in the county - starting $5 a glass or $15-20 a bottle for great small production California wines. Order your meal at the wine bar and enjoy some of our great food with friends and share that bottle. "Mostly self-service" - tipping is optional.

    I am excited that our 2nd location is going to provide the West County with a real nice spot for meeting friends for a bit of food and wine and face-to-face chat. We are also now remodeling our Sonoma location into a full wine bar, serving small plates in the 1891 Pinelli Building. Both locations are open to the public. Sebastopol is open Thur-Mon 11-7 (til 9 Fri/Sat). Sonoma is open 7 days a week, 11-6.

    Community events - Sonoma Wine Shop is pleased to open for the Community our wine club for these events. Look for more special events at very reasonable prices:

    Passover Dinner: Bistro V used to host community events - which we are now restarting. First, we would like to announce our Passover dinner at 5:00, Friday April 2nd, 2010. Community Seder will be led by Manus Monroe, a volunteer. Dinner will include semi-traditional menu with vegetarian option and a nice glass of wine. Matzo Ball Soup (or Vegetarian), Gifilte Fish or Asparagus, Lamb Stew or Vegetables in Parchment. Cost is $24 - $10 under 10, $12 under 12.

    Easter Sunday Brunch, April 4th, "La Bodega" hosts a kid-friendly Easter brunch. Egg hunt starts at 10:30 am. Brunch starts at 11:00 until 3:00 pm. Cost is $20 including glass of champagne, kids -$10 under 10, $12 under 12. Eggs Benedict, French toast, Quiche, Ham and kid's choices.

    Both events have limited seating.

    My folks went on Saturday, immediately joined the wine club, dragged us on Sunday - food was fab - and of course, you can't go wrong with a good wine selection! It's different, it's fun it's delicious!
