We'll have a bit more to say in an editorial about why the Democrats have waited too long to come out firmly against Alito, who threatens their very existence in his support of a monarchal presidency with absolute executive powers.

And why "hearings" on Supreme Court nominees are just a staged farce that actually force the Democrats into accepting the "moderate" lies and evasions that Alito will, well-rehearsed, spout.

But for the moment, we will rest our case with this chilling quote from Jerry Falwell, from a Sunday, January 8th gathering of religious extremists:

"What we've worked on for 30 years, to mobilize people of faith and value in this country, what we've done through these years is coming to culmination right now," Falwell said at a rally on the eve of Alito's confirmation hearing.

"Now we're looking at what we really started on 30 years ago, reconstruction of a court system gone awry," Falwell said.

Falwell doesn't need any staged hearings to know where Alito is coming from. Why, given Alito's paper trail, and his role as an architect of the imperial presidency, do the Democrats say they need to wait and see how he "conducts himself in the hearings"?

This isn't a theatrical production. The Democrats are about to sign their own death warrant and enable Bush in making Congress irrelevant.
