Re: Things you should know but probably don't

Just off the top of my head--I believe that #27, #29, and #33 are myths. Am I right?

Also, #15 may be a bit misleading, as ketchup was a very different substance back in the 1830's than it is now. For one thing, I don't think it had tomatoes in it then!

And, the oddest thing about #2 isn't that the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper; it's that it was written by a slave owner (Thomas Jefferson)!

Re: Things you should know but probably don't

    Hi Dixon,
    responses below:

#yes, this could be misleading. "Ketchup" used to just mean "sauce" and was not necessarily made of tomatoes, but many other vegatables as well. It could have easily had versions that were medicinal.

    #27 you guessed it,
The statement regarding the rule of thumb is wrong. The actual origin is from where carpenters would use their thumbs to measure with.

#29 actually, this may be true
Celery indeed does potentially take more calories to eat than it provides, if you include the digesting as well as the chewing. Not by much though. As for apples, I believe this is false.

#33 you nailed this one too, as far as I can tell.
I have not been able to find anywhere that beans are banned for astronauts, in fact I found astronaut menus that had beans included on them. Also, I have found that their suits have been made to filter potential gaseous eruptions! I would imagine that discretion is encouraged, and upheld, as it is not pleasant to sit in your own private pollution waiting for the air filter to work!

    here's a couple more I'll throw in

#20 I believe Wendy did exist as a name prior to peter pan, it can be found in the english census of 1881. Barry (peter pans author) may however have been the first to coin the name for a girl as up until that point it was only seen attributed to boys.

    and #22
It's believed scissors were invented by the egyptians in around 1500bc, not Leonardo Davinci who was born almost 3000 years after their invention.
