So...I went to the shelves that hold my CDs (yes, I still listen to CDs on a regular basis and didn't switch formats for many years...many years of 78s before I switched to cassettes, many more years before I then switched to 45s, many more years before I switched to LPs, many more years before I finally found out about CDs...and now I'm hearing that CDs are also becoming a thing of the past). Now what? Now...the answer is...strange guys (and/or gals).
So...I picked four of the guys, chose some of my favorites out of their music, numbered them (1) through (4), and went through the four until I picked enough to fill up two hours. See how easy radio is? What's that? Who are the four? Well, in order, you'll hear:
1. Ray Wylie Hubbard. Born in Oklahoma. 72 years old. First record (76): Ray Wylie Hubbard & The Cowboy Twinkies. Formed his own record company at the end of the 80s: Misery Loves Company records. Recently founded a new genre: Outlaw Country.
2. John Prine. Born in Illinois. 72 years old. Discovered in 1971 by Kris Kristofferson, who said about Prine: "(Wrote songs so good) "We'll have to break his thumbs." Among the favorite songwriters of Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. Cash loves Rodney Crowell, Guy Clark, Steve Goodman and Prine. (Note: two of these four are no longer with us.)
3. Randy Newman. Born in Los Angeles. 75 years old. He's written many songs for movies and other things and won many awards for them - Oscars, Emmies, Grammies, etc. He is reported to be an atheist.
4. Tom Russell. Born in Los Angeles. 71 years old. (Hmmm. Just a kid.) Highly recommended: The Man From God Knows Where (1999) and Rose of Roscrae (2015).
...and then we start over again with Ray Wylie Hubbard, and keep playing the four in order until we run out of time. Nothing to it.
Please join me next Friday, 8 to 10 PM, on KRCB-FM, for four strange guys. You'll love them...guaranteed.
