Obama’s obstructed term
EDITOR: So Richard Downing (“My turn to cheer,” Letters, Tuesday) says he suffered through eight years of Barack Obama. Now it’s his turn to cheer and the losers should quit crying. Let me point out the problem with this argument: Obama never really got “his turn.”
Every losing candidate since Dwight Eisenhower left office, whether Republican or Democrat, graciously promised to work with the newly elected president — until Obama was elected. Republicans made history by vowing to thwart a newly elected president throughout his term, and they did. They even refused Obama a U.S. Supreme Court justice in the end. Obama suffered eight full years of constant obstruction.
Moreover, rather than be uniting, this newly elected president is crowing and combative and vowing to fight his enemies, i.e. anyone who opposed him (half of America). The losers never even got a chance to be conciliatory.
Until someone on the right acknowledges the previous eight years of unpatriotic obstruction and the undemocratic bullying by their winner, please stop telling us to get over it.
