A sweet story of a caring, brave father standing strong against cultural norms and social pressure to protect his son:

I was born in 1967 near the height of the circumcision epidemic, but I am intact. My father was a gruff man, with many faults. One day, as an unruly teen and tired of being teased in the locker room, I asked him why I had not been circumcised, and he uttered four words:

"Because I love you."

Later, he told me that in the hospital where I was born, circumcision was a given. The nurses asked him, "Will he be circumcised today or tomorrow?" He had another four-word answer:

"He will be whole."

He then took me from the arms of a protesting nurse, placed me in a shoebox on the passenger seat of his rusty pick-up truck, and brought me and my tiny foreskin home. He gave me a gift that cannot be paralleled. A dad can have many faults. But my dad was heroic. I write this today to my dad, Because I love him.
