"Nymphomaniac" not only pushes the envelope several hundred miles, as Trier normally does with his iconoclastic movies, but he explores a whole new continent and takes moviemaking to an entirely new level.

"Nymphomaniac" will not disappoint. But be warned, this movie is not for the faint of heart; it is most definitely not adequate for children to watch. You will either love this movie or you will hate it; there is no in-between possible here. You will have to see it to believe it. My little blurb cannot possibly do it justice.

"Nymphomaniac" has my strongest recommendations. It is a 4 hour biopic and we could not finish watching it in one day, not because it is "too long," but because this barrier breaking movie was simply too intense. It doesn't let up at all in either of its 2 volumes.

This movie, literally, reflects life itself; it is the ultimate reality flick. It explores acutely taboo subjects and does not fixate exclusively on nymphomania. It is ultra realistic. There are many instances and scenes that are completely original in concept and never before broached in a movie. It is a first. It opens totally new ground on several fronts.

Furthermore, the movie is astonishingly and challengingly intellectual. You have to "work" to understand the dialogues and ideas because they are complex and it is easy to miss many of the nuances in the messages being conveyed throughout the film. The ideas are not confusing or metaphysical or "woo woo," although some might disagree with me on this point. The subjects treated in the film are manifold but are very well researched and portrayed in depth and detail.

Among other important aspects of the film, it begins with the life of a budding, 15 year old nymphomaniac and follows her life events until she is in her 40s or 50s. But again, this movie is not, by far, exclusively about nymphomania, which serves as a pretext to expose the unsuspecting audience to a long list of other social and psychological issues surrounding not only human sexuality but also the law, morality, culture, heritage, history, biology, and others.

Watching "Nymphomania" is a challenge; it's an opportunity to learn and open our eyes to the invisible world around us and inside of us. Dare to watch it. But again, there is no middle ground available in this movie; you will either love it or hate it. But you won't be the same person after you watch it if you are capable of seeing it through.
