John Muir Laws, Speed-Drawing Birds workshop

Have you ever been out in the field and wanted to sketch a bird you see, capturing details in their plumage while conveying the energy in their moment? This bird sketching workshop will give you the tools you need to draw birds on the move. We will begin with the fundamentals, adapt these for moving birds, develop an understanding of bird anatomy and proportions, and learn how to speed draw. The workshop will begin at the lovely Heron Hall for the instructional portion, and then move outside to spend time practicing our drawing skills along the Laguna. This will be a wonder-filled day of nature and art to help you jump start your own field journal or re-inspire you to pick up your sketchbook again.

John Muir Laws (Jack) is a wildlife biologist and Research Associate at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. He has taught nature education since 1984 in California, Wyoming, and Alaska. In addition to illustrating our Field Guide to the Laguna de Santa Rosa, Laws has written and illustrated books on the subjects of art and natural history including The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds (2012), Sierra Birds: a Hiker’s Guide (2004), The Laws Guide to the Sierra Nevada (2007), and The Laws Pocket Guide Set to the San Francisco Bay Area (2009). Jack is also a regular contributor to Bay Nature magazine with his Naturalists Notebook column. His work, which is fueled by a deep love and respect for nature, is devoted to celebrating biodiversity and connecting people to nature through art and field journalism.

This is a great opportunity for teachers, home school parents, or anyone interested in taking their birding and nature study to the next level.
