The South Korean government is constructing a naval base on Jeju Island, sister city of Santa Rosa and an internationally recognized “Island of World Peace” that is home to more UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites than any single geographic location on Earth. Construction and dredging of the island’s seabed and its coral communities is accelerating daily on the coastline of Gangjeong village, a small farming and fishing village that has reluctantly become the site of a global battle for peace.Since 2007, residents of Gangjeong, who overwhelmingly oppose the base, and have tried to block construction with lawsuits and pleas for a proper environmental impact study. They’ve been fined, beaten, arrested and imprisoned. Internationally renowned peace activist and retired U.S. Army colonel Ann Wright will report on the situation and her recent visit to the island in support of the villager’s resistance against the naval base. Santa Rosa’s sister city cultural exchange program is spearheaded by local resident Don Taylor, an honorary citizen of Jeju Island. Don Taylor will open the event with a brief talk about the Santa Rosa-Jeju sister city program and his love of Jeju Island.
