...As far as I'm concerned, every single state and federal leader (republican and democrat) has failed us because the only rational thing that could have been done was to provide Universal Basic Income to all to stay isolated in small clusters through this flu season, enact Medicare for All, and inject massive funding into science and health infrastructure (while letting corporations fend for themselves and allow a necessary transition to our next economy take place). ...spot on. But as you say, it's a rant for its own sake, because, America. People would rather fight over masks and get involved in other squirrel-chasing activities. Going for UBI is still a reach. But it's far, far more possible than it would have ever before. We may get there yet. It's been easy to make a pessimistic case about how this will all play out, but at least there are a few elements that can go into an optimistic one for a change.

Yeah, the going back to normal trend when the infection numbers were still so high seemed crazy to me at the time. And now it's turned out that it was crazy! How could our leaders have failed to realize this?

Soco numbers are going to go up. Community spread is out of control, local, county, state, nation, world. The most important number is death per million. In soco it's 6. This indicates we have no herd immunity. Yes we have dodged the bullet, and the machine gun is still firing and has unlimited amo.

Yeah for us for having really good bunkers.

In la county death per million is similar to ny and jersy, 1600-1800. What does this mean? Since the center of our state's virus outbreak, still, has well developed herd immunity, Cali daily deaths will continue to trend down. Slowly since the whole state death per million is 160.

Florida and tehas are interesting comparisons. Both have second wave numbers like Cali for daily cases. And unlike our state, daily death is also rising again. Florida death per million is over 200, tehas under 50. Their curves will diverge.

Latin America covid numbers seem to be stabilizing, and yes death per million is getting into the over 300 range. Unlike Africa, near and mideast, India. Where death per million is low.

It's a human paradox, we need community, and community kills. What does the percentage of testing positive mean? Since testing is changing so rapidly it's anybody's guess. Now that we're testing more including prisoners, homeless, undocumented and the % of positive tests has risen to as much as 30% in certain counties, we know we are together, hiding only works so long.

Of course we don't have herd immunity. No human population has herd immunity from COVID-19.

What are you talking about? We are nowhere near herd immunity. How could we be?

In simple terms, herd immunity can occur in a defined population when most people are immune to a pathogen. When the percentage of immune individuals is large enough—way more than 50%—two interrelated phenomena can prevent the pathogen from spreading to most of the remaining non-immune sub-population.

There are not enough non-immune hosts to enable the pathogen to adequately reproduce. Therefore, the pathogen dies out and disappears from the population—unless an infected carrier from outside the population re-introduces the pathogen.

There are not enough non-immune potential victims to become infected.

These are really two sides of the same coin. It is a matter of probabilities. When the number of pathogens is small enough and the number of non-immune potential victims is small enough, the disease cycle cannot sustain itself. Perhaps a stray pathogen will occasionally infect an unfortunate non-immune individual, but the disease will no longer be a public health problem in the population.

The following graphic, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, illustrates the concept:

Rhode island has a fatality rate of .09%. This is enough to indicate substantial developing herd immunity. No, this has nothing to do with herd immunity. There was no opportunity for RI to acquire herd immunity. "Immunity," herd or otherwise, means that individuals have an immune response to a pathogen, and therefore the individual does not become sick or infected by that pathogen. It has nothing to do with the course of the disease in someone who is sick. I discussed this an another post in this thread today.

The term "herd immunity" keeps appearing here in discussions of the pandemic. Some of these uses do not conform to standard definitions of the term. Since so much here on WaccoBB devolves into partisan ideological arguments, I decided to research the meaning of "herd immunity" in standard reference sources, with no connection to the COVID-19 pandemic. I found the following definitions:

"the immunity of a group, community, or population to an infectious disease as a result of mass vaccination. The higher the percentage of the population vaccinated, the greater will be the resistance to the spread of infection within the population." Oxford Reference, Oxford University Press, at https://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/oi/authority.20110803095932166
(https://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/oi/authority.20110803095932166)
"The resistance to the spread of a contagious disease within a population that results if a sufficiently high proportion of individuals are immune to the disease, especially through vaccination."
Oxford English Dictionary, at https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/herd_immunity

"a situation in which a disease cannot spread through a group of people because enough of them are immune (= unable to get a disease), usually because of having been vaccinated (= given an injection)"
Cambridge English Dictionary, at https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/herd-immunity
(https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/herd-immunity)
"the immunity or resistance to a particular infection that occurs in a group of people or animals when a very high percentage of individuals have been vaccinated or previously exposed to the infection."
Random House Unabridged Dictionary, at https://www.dictionary.com/browse/herd-immunity

"Resistance to the spread of infectious disease in a group because susceptible members are few, making transmission from an infected member unlikely.
"The immunologic status of a population, determined by the ratio of resistant to susceptible members and their distribution."
Stedman's Medical Dictionary, at https://www.dictionary.com/browse/herd-immunity

"Herd immunity (or community immunity) occurs when a high percentage of the community is immune to a disease (through vaccination and/or prior illness), making the spread of this disease from person to person unlikely. Even individuals not vaccinated (such as newborns and the immunocompromised) are offered some protection because the disease has little opportunity to spread within the community." Infection Prevention and You, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, at
https://apic.org/Resource_/TinyMceFileManager/for_consumers/IPandYou_Bulletin_Herd_immunity.pdf. (I just noticed that this one item was published in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.)

"a reduction in the risk of infection with a specific communicable disease (such as measles or influenza) that occurs when a significant proportion of the population has become immune to infection (as because of previous exposure or vaccination) so that susceptible individuals are much less likely to come in contact with infected individuals" Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, at https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/herd%20immunity
(https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/herd%20immunity)

The most important number is death per million. In soco it's 6. This indicates we have no herd immunity.

Hi and thanks for the updates.

I looked at the link you provided, and it said 51 available hospital beds...(when I searched re: Sonoma County).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing...I'm wearing a mask and isolating etc.,

I recognize dangerous spike, and expected it --due to opening up stuff too soon...

Even if workers (wine tasting, for instance) wear masks face shields gloves etc., the people at the restaurants, wineries, bars etc., are endangering the workers (as well as themselves)...

Any way, I'm wondering where those 5 beds are available...

Thanks again for the updates!

There are regular beds and ICU beds. ICU allows a greater level of care, needed when someone is in really bad shape. According to the PD article in an emergency they can convert a certain number of regular beds to an ICU or almost ICU level. I have not read anywhere at which hospitals or how many. The 51 is the number in current use. This is a Sonoma County only link and easier to read than the other https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/1edbb41952a8417385652279305e878d/page/page_23/

County did not report again last night. They may have their hands full. Sonoma State has told The County they are ending their agreement to use parts of the campus for the fight against Covid-19. https://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/news/sonoma-county-scrambles-to-secure-extra-hospital-beds-after-sonoma-state-un/

Cases are going up while deaths are trending down. I listened to The Governors press conference today. He explained they are not completely sure all the reasons but he suggested it was likely due to the median age of those infected trending lower, testing is picking up more cases, better isolation of senior facilities, treatments improving. Deaths are a trailing indicator and may go back up Newsom said.

Thank You, to those who thanked me for posting the daily covid-19 numbers. We are in this once in a lifetime disrupting pandemic together. May all of us get through it in the best health and spirit we can.

We and pretty much every other state did not follow CDC guidelines on reopening and it looks like we are going to pay for it. You can see how a second wave or a second surge in the first wave gets you. Everyone is tired of it. They hang out with just a few friends who are being carful. Let their guard down, indulge in conspiracy theories. It's really terrible how the Asian and European countries have put us to shame in controlling infections. This chart is a week or so old that red line extends upward twice as far now.

Blanket generalizations are avoidance of the truth. There is no shame in getting sick and the different ways countries and us states have delt with covid are ongoing medical experiments. So far the only places which are even close to being over it got it bad fast or let it fester. Cali is midway through the second process. Ny, Italy, Spain, Belgium took the crash course. UK midatlantic and much of the Midwest, Sweden are just about done with festering.

The good thing about festering now, which includes the majority of the us, is that western medicine has improved treatment protocols so far fewer die.

The numbers for soco will continue to rise. There is no political or personal will to go back to to full lockdown which only plateaued the numbers in Cali. The economic, social, and emotional costs are just too high.

The findings showing that two common-cold betacoronaviruses, specifically OC43 and HKU1, confer lasting immunity to the COVID-19 virus are potentially revolutionary. Consider that the original smallpox vaccine consisted of pus from the lesions on a person infected by cowpox, a much milder form of the disease. Could it really be this simple? Time will tell.

Why are some immune to Covid-19. It might not be because you have a powerful immune system but rather you were lucky enough to be sick with a certain cold virus in the last decade and a half. https://www.sciencetimes.com/articles/26038/20200612/common-cold-give-covid-19-immunity-lasting-up-17-years.htm

Thanks for asking Lilith!

It is the people who don't have symptoms, who are not distancing or wearing masks when appropriate,
are spreading the virus.

People who have the virus, but show no symptoms, have as much virus in their throat and nasal passages,
as the people who are sick with symptoms.

It's not just about the tests,
it's whether we have enough:

doctors and nurses (so they don't get burned out),

equipment and Intensive Care Beds available,

whether they have enough PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
such as masks, gloves, gowns, for docs and nurses and others who work in the same facilities
(including janitors, etc.).

Last week, here in Santa Rosa, outside of Memorial Hospital, nurses were demonstrating because they needed more PPE.

If there is not enough PPE ,
then the docs, nurses, and other workers
can get the virus,
and then spread it from patient to patient, as well as other workers, docs, and nurses.

I knew Sonoma Co. was opening up too soon...

Approximately 1/2 of the people I see when I go out (frequently much more than 1/2), are not wearing a mask, and do not seem to be carrying one in case it is needed.

When I grocery shop, half of the people (including workers) don't care or are forgetting about distancing.

I was sick from the end of Nov. thru the middle of February...

still exhausted, ie., have not recovered completely.

I'm frustrated and want the whole thing to be over too,
but the only way to stop it, is to stop spreading it.

I don't want to argue or debate, I have my own experience and the expereiences of others I know.

Kindly,
Dusty:heart:

I blame the virus. Its quite contagious. Sure culture and it's relation to government recommendations can slow the spread. But it doesn't stop it. Look at Japan for example, blowing up again there. In California there have been times when case numbers held steady, and even times when daily deaths were in decline, but overall community spread continues. Eventually we'll either all be exposed and/or there will be an effective vaccine. Numbers will decline before then, like in LA right now.

GATHERINGS CONTRIBUTING TO COVID-19 TRANSMISSION IN SONOMA COUNTY

According to the County of Sonoma, we have seen a rapid increase of COVID-19 cases in our county over the past week. In the last 72 hours alone, we have seen 167 new positive cases.

Cases are associated with different sectors and activities, including households, grocery stores, travel, close contacts, and community transmission.

14% of 611 cases reported between June 21 and July 11 were associated with
gatherings, including 4th of July BBQs with friends and family, birthday parties, bridal showers, funerals, etc.

The County asks, for the safety of our community, please avoid gatherings with those outside of your immediate household. Remember to follow mitigation measures anytime you leave your home:

Stay at least 6 ft away from anyone not living in your household
Clean/wipe any commonly used surfaces
Wear a face covering in any public place
Bring hand sanitizer with you, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds
If you feel sick, stay home and call your doctor

STATE RESTRICTIONS ON LOCAL BUSINESSES STAND

A message from the County of Sonoma:

Recently, the State Department of Public Health ordered new restrictions on bars, restaurants, and other indoor business operations in Sonoma County as part of statewide actions to slow the increased spread of the coronavirus.

The State Health Order prohibits indoor activities that bring residents into prolonged contact with people who are not members of their own household. These gatherings have been identified as helping spread the coronavirus.

The state directed these industries to stop indoor services*:

Bars, clubs, breweries, brewpubs and distilleries
Card rooms
Family entertainment centers (for example: bowling alleys and arcades)
Gyms and fitness centers (including yoga and dance studios)
Hair salons and barbershops
Shopping malls
Movie theaters
Offices for non-essential (non-critical infrastructure) sectors
Protests
Personal care services, (for example: nail salons, body waxing and tattoo

parlors)

Restaurants
Wineries/tasting rooms
Worship services and cultural ceremonies (for example: weddings and

funerals)

Zoos and museums

111 Cases in Sonoma County. The county has adopted a new way to report location of cases. What was previously referred to as West County is now broken down in two categories, Sebastopol West and Russian River Area. They also have a location called other. I have no idea what that means. It could be people that became ill while here on a visit or inmates from San Quentin. Our previous West County case numbers do not equate to the new way they are reporting. There is also a large number of under investigation, perhaps those numbers were previously allocated proportionally to each region. https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/1edbb41952a8417385652279305e878d/page/page_11/?views=view_35

I live in west Santa Rosa but do all my shopping in Sebastopol. I couldn't get a test but had the symptoms beginning of March which lasted seven weeks. One odd symptom, that I'm still dealing with, is that I can rarely sleep for more than two hours at a time. I've been sleeping about 25 hours a week for the past five months. This is the opposite of how I used to sleep - and for decades. My issue had always been that I needed "too much" sleep - at least ten hours or more per night. Strange and exhausting flip. Anyone else have their sleep effected?

In Sonoma County if you have a group of 50 people there will be a 56% change one or more will be Covid Positive. https://covid19risk.biosci.gatech.edu

I'm so sorry to hear you are still experiencing symptoms. It looks like a lot of people will have long lasting issues. As for sleep, the brain is definitely affected, although it looks like it more from the lack of oxygen than the virus itself in the brain (but the science is changing all the time). So having sleep problems makes sense if that area of your brain has been affected.

A close friend's niece, in her 40's, died of it in Florida. Three friends, all in their 70's, got it in March and had a very rough time of it; all three now suffer from chronic fatigue. A couple I've known for many years from Pagan circles just got it, not hospitalized so far. A neighbor got it in a VA convalescent hospital, he's home now. YMMV

Two dear local friends got it, one very severely and they have lingering side effects; their descriptions of the experience is way beyond any flu I've ever had; there's a kind of malevolent presence they both described. A friend in NY feels he will never be the same, several organs impacted seriously. Luckily I know no one who has died, but I have a few friends on the East coast who do. Kindness on this thread is suggested. This virus is impacting many people's lives.

(that's a joke) Obviously just because you are in Bodega Bay doesn't mean the guy next to you doesn't have Covid-19. It only means to date no residents in that zip code have tested positive. Most people you will run into in Bodega Bay don't live in Bodega Bay.

So are the numbers good or bad? The fact that they are going down is a reflection of authority choice. Is this good or bad? Given the increasing evidence that exposure creates herd immunity does the fact that west county has been relatively successful in sheltering, is this good or bad? Let's celebrate our privilege, while knowing it is our doom. Who will die next? Take care, stay safe, encourage your immune system.
