    Occupy the Sebastopol City Council


    Hello Occupy Activists and Friends of Occupy,

    Please unite with us to mark a positive Occupy occasion this Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at the Sebastopol City Council meeting.
    The Vice Mayor of Sebastopol Robert Jacob will introduce a resolution commemorating the national and local Occupy Movement.
    This will include plans to create a permanent free speech meeting area which will replace The OS Information Tent in the Sebastopol Mario Savio Plaza

    Please come to the Sebastopol City Council Meeting. There will be an opportunity for public comment. Do you have an Occupy experience or story to tell?

    The meeting starts at 6 pm, the resolution is # 5 on the agenda, it's hard to predict the actual time this item will come up.

    A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEBASTOPOL RECOGNIZING OCCUPY SEBASTOPOL IN THEIR SUPPORT OF THEIR EFFORTS TO CREATE A FREE SPEECH COMMUNITY

    WHEREAS, on November 17, 2011, the City Council of the City of Sebastopol And Occupy Sebastopol created the Peacetown Agreement, and the Occupy Sebastopol Information Tent began its tenure in the Downtown Plaza; and

    WHEREAS, on December 6, 2011, the City Council of the City of Sebastopol approved Resolution Number 5858, in Support for the Occupy Movement; and

    WHEREAS, on February 21, 2012, the City of Sebastopol City Council adopted Resolution Number 5862, Amendment to the Constitution to end corporate personhood and to reaffirm that money does not equal speech; and

    WHEREAS, the City of Sebastopol City Council recognizes Occupy Sebastopol for their efforts and commitment in focusing on the issues of free expression, economic injustice and inequality, and degradation, not only locally, but at the State and Federal level as well; and

    WHEREAS, the City of Sebastopol recognizes that Occupy Sebastopol has conducted their general assemblies in a peaceful and respectful manner and has demonstrated true democracy, which is the voice of the people, and

    WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Sebastopol and Occupy Sebastopol understand that a government should be responsive to the people and promote the general health, safety and welfare of their community.

    NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED AND ORDERED that the City of Sebastopol City Council hereby:

    Declare and Proclaim that April 7, 2013 will forever be recognized as Occupy Sebastopol Day in the City of Sebastopol, and encourage all citizens to take part in ending injustices for all; and

    Declare the northeast corner of the Maria Savio Free Speech Plaza as a gathering place to meet the values of freedom of speech; and

    Declare that Occupy Sebastopol will remove the Occupy Sebastopol information tent on or before April 8, 2013 and that the City of Sebastopol and Occupy Sebastopol will work together to replace the tent in the Mario Savio Plaza with the creation of a designated area with permanent items such as a circle of benches, kiosk; etc; and

    Declare that the City of Sebastopol supports the public statement of Occupy Sebastopol made on March 5, 2013 to: remove the Occupy information tent from the Mario Savio Plaza on or before April 8, 2013; to restore the grass and surrounding area of the tent at no cost to the City of Sebastopol and to assist in any other plans the City has for the Occupy tent area; to continue to foster freedom of speech and communication among residents by maintaining General Assemblies at 3:00 pm on Sundays; and to partner width the City of Sebastopol to insure the representation of disenfranchised communities; and

    THEREFORE, BE IT EVEN FURTHER RESOLVED, THAT the City of Sebastopol and Occupy Sebastopol will work collaboratively on future issues and resolutions to help end a world of injustices to all.
