Look into state constitutions banning atheists from holding public office.

Quote Seven states currently prohibit atheists from hiding public office. They are Arkansas, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. This violates the "freedom of religion" in the First Amendment, as well as separation of church and state. Belief in a higher power should not be a criteria for holding public office anywhere in the United States of America.

FYI, this petition is at whitehouse.gov website and you have to register to sign this or any other petition within it.

I did sign this petition today.

After re-reading the petition, I noticed a bad typographical error in it (yes it is the .gov website's error not me); It says "Seven states currently prohibit atheists from hiding public office"... It should say "...holding public office".
I noted that in the comment box of the feedback link with request to have an "official" return statement.
I don't know what or if/when I will receive a reply (return statement) but I tried anyway.

Anyway, there's no point asking politicians not to hide political office. That's what virtually all of them are doing.
