    Mandatory Draft Bill?

I just received this infor in an email. Does anyone know if this is true or just email sensationalism?

US Mandatory MILITARY DRAFT 18-42 quietly snuck in! As described at https://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c109:H.R.4752.IH: on February 14, 2006, Congressman Charles Rangel (NY) introduced a bill (Universal National Service Act of 2006 - HR 4752 IH) aiming at drafting everyone - men and women alike - from the ages of 18 to 42 into the military for a minimum period of 2 years. Or to quote the bill: "To provide for the common defense by requiring all persons in the United States, including women, between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." The House is to convene on June 6 (06/06/06] to debate and possibly adopt this bill, that is, unless a vast public outcry succeeds in derailing this insanity, which you can do by writing a letter of protest to your congress person through https://www.conservativeusa.org/mega-cong.htm or https://www.webslingerz.com/jhoffman/congress-email.html

    Re: Mandatory Draft Bill?

You can find the full text of the bill on the Library of Congress website at https://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c109:H.R.4752:

Ragel makes an interesting case: what if the children of the wealthy and priveliged (or even those on the still-comfortable upper end of the middle class) were required to serve in the military with no exceptions? The stay-at-home hawks and armchair generals may be a little less eager to go to war if their own kids were being sent to do the dirty work.

I heard Rangel speaking about this on KPFA. He wants a draft so that everyone of draft age is vulnerable. Perhaps that's not the word. Rather than just the poor and people of color, all would be affected by a draft. That means sons & daughters of Congresspeople. That means students at Ivy League colleges. With a volunteer army composed (at least partially) of those who seek to escape poverty and privation, there isn't the anti-war outcry there would be if a draft were put into place. Rangel's anti-war and this is the way he has chosen to express his outrage.

    Re: Mandatory Draft Bill?

Representative Rangel has proposed this bill every year since at least 2003. It is nothing new. There are those in the Peace / Anti-War Movement who see a new draft around every corner. Some of them are much closer in touch with developments than I am. I suggest calling the Peace & Justice Center of Sonoma County if you are concerned. (google it, they/we have a website, there you can find the phone number, hours, address, etc.)

My opinion is that in spite of recruiting problems and ever expanding imperial wars, the powers that be know that a draft will be fuel for a fire of resistance (as it was during the Vietnam War) and the last thing they want is that. They'll only go for it if they have absolutely no other choice. But I've been wrong before. Currently there is the poverty / no life or career opportunities draft. And should another major attack on the U.S. occur, the resultant patriotism draft.
