New Hampshire: Opposition Growing to Anti Gay Marriage Effort
Carl Martland of Sugar Hill got pretty mad when he heard something called Article 23 would be voted on at the town meeting next week. “I just get very upset when narrow-minded people are pushing political and religious agendas that are really counter to the US. Constitution and the NH. Constitution.”
Article 23 urges the legislature to allow the citizens of New Hampshire to vote on an amendment to the New Hampshire Constitution that would define marriage. It is identical to articles in more than 100 towns statewide, including Easton, Franconia and Littleton. Those in favor of it say it is merely a chance to give the state’s voters a voice on an important issue. Those who oppose it say voters already had a voice through their elected representatives and the move is designed to overturn the state’s marriage equality act.
It took 25 signatures on a petition to put the article before Sugar Hill’s voters on March 9. The petition drive was organized by Pastor Ned Wilson of the Sugar Hill Community Church. He declined to be interviewed about it.
