On Tuesday, September 29, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors is considering the sale of the Sonoma County Landfill and transfer stations to Republic Services, a large Arizona-based landfill operator. The proposed Purchase and Sales Agreement (PSA) for the divestiture includes several
provisions that threaten the continuation of our local compost and mulch facility.
We urgently ask you to take action to protect the successful compost and mulch program we enjoy in Sonoma County.
While the County has an existing agreement with the Sonoma County Waste Management Agency to make a compost site available through 2017, the PSA provides an extension of the current compost operations only through 2011.
The PSA does not clearly designate where the organic matter will go after 2011. There is noprovision that the material be composted for sale to our community. Instead it can be applied tothe surface of the land at the Landfill or other facilities. Republic Services could even haul it out of county.
We ask you to contact the Board of Supervisors and members of your City Council to support our four action points listed on the other side of this page. Make your voice heard!
It’s vital that you act before the Sept 29 hearings.
You can also help by joining us at the Sept. 29 hearing.

Sonoma County Organics Program At Risk
CALL FOR ACTION:
Protect the County-wide Organics Program
We at Sonoma Compost Company ask that the Sonoma County Board of
Supervisors, the Cities of Sonoma County, and the Sonoma County Waste
Management Agency (SCWMA) take and support the following actions:
1) That the County and SCWMA (and Republic Services, if divestiture
proceeds) extend the current Organics Processing agreement with
Sonoma Compost to operate at the current site until a new compost
facility (whether at the Central Landfill site or elsewhere) is permitted
and operational.
2) That the County and SCWMA (and Republic Services, if divestiture
proceeds) continue working with Sonoma Compost to identify a
new compost site at the Central Landfill, with Sonoma Compost
assisting by promptly updating the expiring Report of Compost Site
Information (RCSI) revisions for a new site.
3) That the County remove provisions from the proposed divestiture
agreement documents which grant Republic Services exclusive right
of first refusal for food waste composting.
4) That SCWMA’s successful organic program be continued, including
the requirement that all source-separated wood and yard debris
received at transfer stations and the Central Landfill be diverted to the
Organics Processing site of SCWMA operated by Sonoma Compost.
