Changes to Sonoma County Library rules

Wondering what other library users think of the new rules to take effect on February 23.

All items loaned for 21 days, two renewals possible. There have been different loan periods (from 7-28 days) for different types of materials – books, DVDs, new novels, popular nonfiction, magazines, etc.

Checkout up to 30 items at one time, and 10 of those items can be DVDs.

Reserves limited to 20 items (not more than 10 DVDs). Was 30 items.

Fees now $.20 per day. Was $.30 for adult items.

I think thank the universe there is a library still open. No doubt the hours will be dramatically cut soon and the fees raised.

I am oh so grateful for our library. I need to have at least one good book going at all times. Current read is Obama's "Audacity of Hope". I can request items via computer, and search for new books by familiar authors, etc. Used to use the sunday ny times book review for this purpose. My life is enriched by the existence of a public library system. I will joyfully obey their rules and policies. It seems that the new plan will be simpler to remember and result in fewer fines collected, which may be counter productive.

Finally got the story from someone at circulation at the Central library in Santa Rosa.

We know that when the economy goes down, library circulation goes up...so they're feeling the strain.

They're trying to limit hold reserves because they're currently processing 600 incoming items daily. I was surprised to learn that they're reshelving over 100 items that patrons have requested, but don't show up to check out!

I forgot to ask whether the 21 day loan period applies to SuperSearch and new items.

You forgot to mention that you can renew your books online and you can get online notification for books that you ordered and books that are about to be overdue!!!
