Inauguration Eve
Isn’t it amazing
how the jewel of our country
came unbidden to abject darkness?
How we were ridden underground
in chariots of despair, became a nation
of Persephones in winter?
And isn’t it beautiful,
the necessary darkness,
how it broke us open?
Tonight is the Winter Solstice
of the Soul. United, we sing praises
of the possible: a new season,
a new time when color and creed
matter less than our voice
raised in refrain: We are one.
We feel the light again.
We believe in spring.
