sonoma's reliance on Yahoo is not healthy

With the other Wacco and our recycle group both invested in Yahoo, I think it is time for us to look closely at Yahoo and decide if this is a business we want to support. The following report explains what is wrong with this scenario.

In Regards to this, what about Google? I notice they have a groups forum too, not nearly as many as yahoo, and only 1 group in CA that I could see. But, hey, there could possibly be a wacco at google dotcom., or recycle at google dotcom created. I think they have a different more liberal mind set than yahoo. For a check on their mindset, go to google and type in the word failure and hit the "I'm feeling lucky" button and see what pops up. Then try Moron, hit the same button. Has anyone checked out their "groups" requirements, etc?

Re: sonoma's reliance on Yahoo is not healthy

Thanks a lot for reading my post and obviously, the article. And thanks for taking the time to respond and make a suggestion. There is more than one reason to dump Yahoo. When the old Yahoo group and all its compilations of info, all it's networking capability, was erased from existence, we were lucky to have this one to turn to. Imagine if it hadnt been there. Losing that Yahoo group was a real loss to the community. Consider this. Could it have been related to the then upcoming fight for GEfreesonoma? Or organizing against military recruitment efforts or the war? Maybe. I mean, is it that hard to imagine that it could have been motivated by corporate and/or military interests in opposition to the community's organizing activities and that Yahoo was enlisted to help by performing this one small act of erasing the group? We were already taken out on Yahoo once. If it happens again, it's our fault for not learning the lesson.

I'm surprised at the lack of response on this
subject. Perhaps no one read the article from
dissidentvoice. It said Yahoo had collected
evidence for the Chinese government on some
political dissenters. The dissidents were arrested
and sentenced to 10 years in brutal conditions.

Re: sonoma's reliance on Yahoo is not healthy

I've had a few private responses. I'd like to reply here.

What ever happened to Barry's yahoo, it just shows that a yahoo group is very vulnerable. On yahoo email addresses are made public and they can turn us off like a light. But the main point I wish to address is that Yahoo has spied on users and turned them in for punishment for dissenting. Please check out some of these reports for yourself and then ask, is that the kind of business we, as a progressive community, want to be supporting?

Feel free to pass this on.

I'm surprised at the lack of response on this
subject. Perhaps no one read the article from
dissidentvoice. It said Yahoo had collected
evidence for the Chinese government on some
political dissenters. The dissidents were arrested
and sentenced to 10 years in brutal conditions.
