Thousands of Peru’s Andean children face
severe exposure and death

Please help!
Record-breaking cold weather has tightened its grip on the high Andean communities of Peru, where Plan has been working with children for the last 12 years.

“Thousands of children are at immediate risk from exposure, hunger, and respiratory illnesses,” says Tom Miller, Plan’s International Executive Director.

The high Andean communities are now in the grip of an extreme winter, and without immediate assistance many children may not see it through.

“The longer we wait,” Tom says, “the higher the likelihood of this turning into a much greater tragedy.”

Your help is needed immediately!
With Peru’s winter set to last into September, forecasters fear the worst of the weather is still to come.

The record-breaking cold spell is already responsible for the deaths of 55 children under the age of five, as well as more than 6,000 reported cases of Pneumonia.

There is an urgent need for warm clothing and medicine before it is too late.

How you can help
Plan is prepared to distribute Survival Kits to more than 10,000 children and pregnant women in 95 remote Andean communities.

The kits include a blanket, a poncho, a chuyo (woolly hat) and warm socks.

The cost of producing and rapidly distributing the 10,000 Survival Kits comes to $20 per kit.

For $20 you can help keep a child warm
Please act now! Just $20 will help one child survive this unusually cold weather. A gift of $40 can help two children. $100 can literally cover a whole family.

The only way to avert all out misery and suffering for these children is to act now. As well as the distribution of survival kits, Plan is broadcasting urgent weather warnings and survival information messages using Peru’s national radio system.

“This is a race against time,” says Ernesto Moran, Plan’s Country Director in Peru. “It is vital we start getting warm, dry clothing and supplies into the mountain areas as soon as possible.”

“There is no time to lose.”
