Dear Friends,
Boston University and Clark University are launching a ground-breaking
study called the "My Light" Project (Multi-Cultural Youth Living in
Gay/Lesbian-headed Homes Today). The study's purpose is to understand
the experience of transracial and transethnic adoption from the perspectives
of youth whose parents are gay or lesbian. We believe that adopted youth
are in a great position to help increase public awareness and understanding
of families like yours.
To take part in this study youth need to meet the following criteria:
They were adopted and are between 14 and 21 years of age;
They were raised or reside in families headed by lesbians or gay men;
and Participants are of a race or ethnicity different than that of one or
more of their parents.
All the Information gathered in this study will be strictly confidential.
We respect your family's time and aim to make our research as efficient
as possible. Participation will involve answering questions in a brief
telephone survey and participation in either one focus group or, if he or
she prefers, an individual face-to-face interview with a researcher. The
brief telephone survey will take about 20 minutes, and focus groups or
open-ended individual interviews will take approximately one hour. The
focus groups of 4-6 youth will meet at a convenient location in town,
e.g., a private room in a local library.
At the end of the interviews, participants will receive their choice of a $25
gift certificate to either Barnes and Noble or Border's to thank them for being in the study.
