CAMPING AT HONALOA

I'm sitting out here

under a tree

under the stars

next to the sea

writing by flashlight

hearing the night sounds

of surf and frogs

and other campers

laughing and chatting

from their tents

nearby.

Soon

I'll go inside my own

tent

lie down

beside my sweet love

and sleep deep sleep.

Mahalo.

PERSPECTIVE

Woke up early

with money

or the lack of it

on my mind.

Had a dream

I was at a laundramat

with not enough quarters

to do the wash.

I started reading

old newspapers

I've had piled

by my bed

since I arrived last week--

all about war, pollution

old women run over

by speeders

in crosswalks

in Honolulu.

Put the newspapers down

and started worrying

about money some more.

Finally got up

fed the dogs

and the cat

straightened up my little shack

had a banana

and tangerine

fresh from my friend's trees

found a pair of swim fins

that fit just right.

Thought,

maybe this is a sign

the dolphins are in

down at Kehena Beach.

Got my little kit together--

mask and snorkel

cap and snacks.

Went out to the street

and hitched a ride

down.

It’s been a couple hours now

and no dolphins yet.

Still no money either

but hey

I've got the sea

the sky

and who knows--

maybe dolphins

by and by.

Aloha.
