Following is an email from my friend Philip R., who used to live full-time in Sebastopol, married a Cuban woman, and now lives mainly there. He is an excellent film-maker, musician, and host to people wanting to visit Cuba. He is thinking of planning a special Northern California trip there, if there is enough interest.
3 Controversial Reasons to Travel to Cuba for Americans
from Hosted in Havana - Boogalu Productions
Greetings All,
For folks interested in Cuba travel I am sending you this message to help clear up any misconceptions and to provide some new perspectives.
1) BASTION OF SANITY
If you are concerned about the current political situation and disfunction in US society - your island neighbor to the south will be a breath of fresh air. Even with it's many faults and constraints, Cuban society is a rare bastion of sanity.
- With strong family bonds and sense of tradition - Cuban people are exceptionally well mannered and genial.
- Education, health care, and the arts are all strongly supported.
- Limited material resources foster a highly cooperative and creative lifestyle.

2) TRAVEL TO THE ISLAND IS EASY / THE PERCEPTION IS OTHER
Disinformation and confusion about Cuba travel in the past two years has created the perception that travel to the island is complicated and highly restricted. The reality is, in 2015 President Obama opened up Cuba travel with new relaxed policies that are still largely in place. Legal travel to the Island is just a 3 step process:
- Search on the web for US airlines going to Havana.
- Buy your flight and select "support for the Cuban people" as your travel category.
- Purchase a travel visa through your airline.

3) DON'T JUST SEE IT / LIVE IT
The object for some travelers is "to see" as much as possible in the shortest time, but from our experience, you can learn & understand WAY more about Cuba with three days in one place than three different places in three days.
Our approach is different. We believe experiencing and participating in the culture is the way to go. That's done best getting involved with local people like myself, my staff, and the brilliant people, artists, and professionals we put you together with.
Our Company Credo (statement of beliefs)
• pluralism in everything
• people come first
• life and art are not separated
• doing more with less
• honoring our roots
IF ANY OF THE ABOVE STRIKES A CHORD...
I invite you to browse our website and then to get in touch > https://www.hostedhavana.com
We can talk by email and/or phone. Looking forward to getting together.
