President Obama has less than one week left as president. For people in prison fighting for clemency, his choices in the next few days could mark the difference between life and death. Advocates for Chelsea Manning, Leonard Peltier, Mumia Abu Jamal and Oscar López Rivera, to name a few, have made it clear that if President Obama does not act on their behalf, they are unlikely to survive in prison for Donald Trump’s term.
It is vital that we act now. At The Nation, Atoosa Moinzadeh wrote about some of the most high profile people asking for clemency right now and outlined what you can do to help them. Read the post here and then click here to share it on Facebook.
As Moinzadeh points out, President Obama has used sentencing commutations to help people imprisoned under the draconian “war on drugs,” but he remains stingy regarding pardons compared to his predecessors.
There is some room for hope, however. NBC News reported earlier this week that Chelsea Manning was on the president’s short-list for a sentence commutation and a number of high profile people have called for the release of López Rivera and Peltier. Read our post on these cases and more to find out how you can take action. Then be sure to take a minute to share this vital information on Facebook.
