Hey - Remember how we got screwed in 2012 with Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers spending ridiculous amounts of money against our grassroots efforts? How their endless TV commercial smear campaign confused voters?
One of the biggest challenges we face in the fight to have GMOs labeled is the unlimited amounts of corporate money that are allowed to be spent against our efforts due to the Supreme Court's terrible Citizens United decision.
On Tuesday there's a historic case at the California at the California Supreme Court on whether to let Californians have the right to vote for an Proposition 49, an initiative to tell Congress to propose a constitutional amendment overturning Citizens United and telling California's legislature to pass it.
We must show the California Supreme Court that the people demand our right to vote to instruct our representatives to overturn Citizens United and say that money isn't speech!
SIGN THE PETITION so we can reach 100,000 people telling the California Supreme Court to let us vote on Prop 49 and tell Congress to overturn Citizens United!
It's painfully clear unlimited spending on campaigns unleashed by Citizens United is harming our democracy — and our fight for GMO labeling. Prop 49 would let California voters instruct Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn it and essentially declare that corporations aren't people and money isn't speech. Prop 49 reads in full:
"Shall the Congress of the United States propose, and the California legislature ratify, an amendment or amendments to the United States Constitution to overturn Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (2010) 558 U.S. 310, and other applicable judicial precedents, to allow the full regulation or limitation of campaign contributions and spending, to ensure that all citizens, regardless of wealth, may express their views to one another, and to make clear that the rights protected by the United States Constitution are the rights of natural persons only"Free Speech for People filed an amicus brief demonstrating that the California constitution does allow voters to "instruct their representatives", and therefore also allows ballot measures like Prop 49. The California Clean Money Campaign joined the brief which was also signed by Money Out Voters In, CALPIRG, California Common Cause, and Courage Campaign. You can read it here.
On Tuesday Oct 6 there's a big rally and then we'll pack the hearing at the CA Supreme Court in San Francisco. Plus we'll deliver your signatures so they can't ignore our demand to vote to overturn Citizen United. We're so close to having 100,000 signatures. We need you!
SIGN THE PETITION and push the total to more than 100.000 people telling the Court to stop blocking Californians from voting!
Thank you!
