An Empty Canoe


Cast off from the shores of humanity

Set adrift from the crowded calamity

Stepped away from this normal insanity

Turned my back on this worn shallow vanity

Drifting off on this small boat all alone

Calmer waters will be my new home

Inner peace now is all I desire

Can’t put out every literal fire.

Many wish only to try to control me

and devotedly work to discourage me

Better off then to cast off alone

live a new life set adrift on my own.

Many memories are made over time

But not all of them age like good wine.

Never grateful for what I can give

Is truly no way that I had hoped to live.

Never here when I needed you the most,

Time to push off this dock and just coast.

Standing alone in this empty canoe

I will no longer be looking for you.
