Why do "they" vote against their interests?

Here in comfortably liberal Northern California, I still know plenty of people who fit well with the description here. But I bet as you head east/south, this fits damn near everyone.

Even some of the comments are insightful. Some, I said... maybe start with the 'top comments' link.

Re: Why do "they" vote against their interests?

When I worked for In Home Support, I met older, poor people who voted Republican, which was totally against their interest; the cartoonist Tom Tomorrow nailed the reason: mis-identification with the economic elite......Michael Huffington was running for some state office, and one of my clients was going to vote for him; I said "He doesn't have many qualifications, he's just rich." She said "Well, I'd like to be rich."
